FORTCOMING BIAFRAN REFERENDUM, SAFTY OF THE MASSES A CONCERN
The Indigenous People of Biafra, has announced that it will be organizing a referendum in a yet to be mentioned date which according to the press release will not be far from the time of releasing the information.
This organization which is adjudged the most peaceful mass movement globally has in the past taken drastic steps, not minding the consequence to show that their demand for an independent Biafra state from Nigeria is vehemently meant. Some of these measures which include peaceful protests and demonstrations have in the past led to loss of many lives, especially of young men and women in the hands of the Nigeria security outfits.
We have seen referendum held in many places but such places are by far more civilized societies compared to Nigeria. The scots and Catalonians are the freshest in memory. In these places, the exercise may not have been entirely free from violence but there was no loss of life. The reason is simply because the government of the countries with where these people wants to part ways, evidently have respect for human lives. In this case of the Biafrans organizing a referendum, the big question is; will the Nigerian government let it go peacefully? This is the major fear of concerned persons. Judging from past events, there is every reason to expect the worst from the Nigerian government. But will one tell the Biafrans not to go on with proposed referendum? That may mean a disregard to the will of the people. No one knows what tricks the Biafrans who have consistently appeared to have every other armoury but gun power may have up their sleeves. There has been a very thing line between relative peace and and full blown violence between Nigeria and Biafra again, and it is the earnest prayer of all peace lovers the world over that the proposed referendum will not produce the last straw that will break the camel’s back in with regards to the impending danger in that part of our world. Hence, the call to countries and organizations to do the needful. They should wage into the matter and assist in finding a lasting solution to the lingering problem.
It will be a good move if the UN in particular will prevail on Nigeria which is a member state to allow the exercise go on smoothly and respect the outcome. It should also independently monitor it and ensure that whatever becomes the outcome, is respected. The safety of lives in any part of the world is paramount and should be seen as such by all.
