What Can 1 SBD Buy? @adollaraday Contest!
Hello, Steemians! This is my entry for @pennsif's @adollaraday contest, which asks, what can one SBD buy where you live?
I'm that person who is in poverty in a rich country (the US), so you're darn right I pay attention to prices. 😉 Today SBD is at $1.07 USD, so the easy answer is "anything from the dollar store with tax on it," but actually I don't often shop at the dollar store - many things are cheaper elsewhere (though totally, bandaids at the dollar store FTW).
So here's what I can get for $1.07:
I can get 1.39 lb. of flour:
...that's the flour I just bought a bag of at King Soopers this weekend, so I pulled it out. Not wanting to open it just yet, I took a measuring tape to it and discovered that the bag is 16" long, so I tried to even out the level of flour in it and measured roughly 1.4".
See edit at the bottom. I know this made no sense.
...about that much of the bag, roughly up to the word "enriched," is how much of that flour I could get for one SBD. That's roughly enough to make the dough that wraps around the sweet potatoes and onions when I make knish. Speaking of sweet potatoes:
...I could get one average size sweet potato.
I could get enough espresso beans to almost make a quad shot in my moka pot:
...so about this much:
Though honestly, espresso is a luxury for me, so presuming I had the money to spend on it, I would probably wait for a better sale price than eight bucks. Sometimes I can get a bag of Equal Exchange coffee at Vitamin Cottage for $6. I always try and take advantage of that sale when I can.
I could also get a large apple:
...but I don't have a picture of an apple, because fresh fruit is kind of a luxury, too. I know when you plant fruit trees from seed, you don't get the same fruit really, but gala apples are the two trees growing on my balcony right now. 😊
And that's an example of what you can buy for one SBD in Denver! Thanks for reading! :)

Edit:
hahahahaha I just was re-reading this as I do, and I realized I did some Borked Phoenix Math™. I was thinking 16" bag, 16 oz per pound. Because somehow that made sense to my brain. It should be 3/20 of the bag? Almost? I think?
Now you know why there's a suspicion that if I were a kid today I might get diagnosed with dyscalculia (essentially, kinda math dyslexia). Numbers enter my brain, run off to the otherworld, get transformed into related-but-different creatures, burn an algebra textbook in effigy, and spit on logic.
Wow! Your SBD would go further there than it would here. I could buy one small cup of coffee, or 1/3 an apple, or 1/4 loaf of bread, or 1/2 pound of dog food, or a small tin of cat food, or 5 tortillas, or 2 eggs or a carrot.
Wow! A lot of those things are wildly different here. A small tin of cheap cat food, or 1/3 tin of Yuan's allergy food, lol. 1-4 eggs, depending on if you got factory farmed eggs or free range eggs. Tortillas, too, it depends on where from and brand; I don't know if any of the supermercados have an in house tortilla maker where you can buy them fresh or not?
I gave up and make my own. We like spice so I add a little hot pepper to the mix.
I make mine too, because allergies, but occasionally I cheat. 😂
Hi Ceci, do enter the contest if you have time.
Thank you for entering the A Dollar A Day What can you buy for 1 SBD contest :
The sweet potato is the neatest fit.
Maybe we should have our post rewards measured in fruit and veg !
Ha! You earned two potatoes!
I didn't know dyscalculia was a thing but suddenly my whole life makes more sense.
Right? I didn't know about it until a few years ago. A friend told me their kid got diagnosed because he couldn't memorize multiplication tables. I was like ...I never could, either, no matter how shamed and punished and flash carded I was as a child. They pointed me to the diagnostic criteria, and besides spatial skills problems, I was like, it me!!
