ACTRESS HEAD SHOTS - Thoughts and results of yesterday's photoshoot
"When you do them you end up doing a lot more." Some random thoughts from yesterday's actress headshots for RennyGrames
ON HEADSHOTS
Most of my portrait shoots are pretty similar but for every day portraits I can get away with lots more full body, scenic portraits and just lots of different ratios. For headshots it's as expected they really do need the face to fill the image for the most part because they're for a specific purpose. They have to catch the eye of people in their industry and sometimes they are a bit less personality driven than my normal pictures because casting agents and the like are sometimes looking for an image that fits whatever they have in their mind. Or maybe they do want headshots with more personality... but every headshot i see has more of what I call a "blank slate" look... where the actor seems to say I am the blank slate for you create what you need for your production.
ON WORK GETTING YOU MORE WORK
Admittedly I haven't done a lot of headshots for actors, just a small handfull... but when you do I'm guessing they may tell their friends or the agent may keep using you for other clients. I'm not trying to make a living doing headshots but sometimes they are pretty enjoyable and usually easier because they tend to know what they're doing.
ON STUDIO
I am not a studio guy. But when I need to I can do alright. However isn't it funny that the best ones of the day were a few minutes when I said let's go over to the front of the studio and get some near the windows. I did enjoy using my GoDox triggers for the GoDox lights that my friend was using in his studio. That made things way faster and therefore more enjoyable for me. This is the trigger that made my life soooo much easier- Amazon/link
I do let them know that they're free to photoshop the image after for stuff like the flyaways since I don't use or even have photoshop, her husband is a film maker so I think they got that covered it depends on which image the agent even picks
ON FEELING COMFORTABLE
There is so much to be said about feeling comfortable and feeling creative with the model/actress/client and the model/actress/client feeling comfortable AND creative with you. Anyway I know that's a big part of why she contacted me... because I had already done another photoshoot with her like 5 years ago and then did her wedding pictures 3 years ago.
ON GETTING THEM DONE QUICK
These were taken yesterday... since I'm going camping this weekend I told her if she wanted them quick she could help choose. And so these were the 23 images she selected. Plenty of others to add but a smaller selection to begin with so she can send her Agent the pics asap.

p.s. happy to do more of these headshot photoshoots... send people my way. I certainly make more of my living doing weddings but these are great because you can do them mid-day mid-week mid-winter. haha
