Agreed. What kind of food we eat matters more, I think.

Calories are more useful just to measure work equivalent or exercise. And compare to what humans were doing in the past.

I take Robert FOGEL's theory of technophysio evolution due to absolutely more food being produced not quite seriously (it ignores territoriality) but that literature had some interesting stats regarding how much energy is used when naturally doing physical activity. For example, a miner would use four to five thousand calories.
