More on growing potatoes - three experiments: January 19 2019

After much deliberation, I've decided to go with one variety of potato this year: Duke of York, described as:

well-flavoured, pale yellow tubers that can be used as new potatoes or left to grow for use later in the season; a good choice if you only have room for one variety.

Duke of York is an early variety, planted out in late March/early April, and cropping in around ten weeks (this varies depending whether the potatoes are under glass or in the open). Early potatoes need chitting before planting - left in the light in a cool dry space four to six weeks before planting so that the potatoes start to shoot. They're ready to plant when the shoots are about 1-3cm long.

The next question is where to plant them. I found three options on youtube that I'd like to try; two to grow on and one for early new potatoes (a pick and come again arrangement).

Growing Potatoes the Lazy Way

This certainly looks straightforward and would work perfectly on one of the raised beds at the back of the house. Experiment number one.

Allotment Diary: Container Pot Grown Potato Harvest

Five potatoes in a 50l container: 25.4lb yield! This is using Sarpo Mira, a late maincrop potato, so it will be interesting to see how it works with the Duke of York earlies, whether there will be a similar yield. Experiment number two

Growing potatoes in shopping bags for an extended harvest

It is true, this looks the most fiddly, but perhaps the easiest for harvesting new potatoes regularly early in the season. Experiment number three.

Great a duo blog i have to get to my 5-k-a-day

🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

I've never grown potatoes before which is a bad choice as it's the one thing we use weekly without fail. I'm determined to make the most of some allotment space I acquired last year bud was away too much to do anything with. Time to dig out the allotment handbook soon as I'm well out of practice and need to remind myself of what and when.

It says in my book that potatoes are easy - we'll see!
Good idea to get some veg in the ground if you can. I'm not sure I could take on an allotment nowadays, a garden is about the right size for me.
Good luck!

Gracias por la información, sobre todo la siembra en maceta, la tomaré en cuenta para mis siembras en casa.

My pleasure :) 👍
