👉 Discovering Italy | Curon Venosta, The Submerged Town
Day #1 - The small village in the province of Bolzano represents a curious attraction for the incredible historical event of which he was the victim.
Curon Venosta (Province of Bolzano)
Geographic coordinates: 46°48'28.6"N 10°32'29.4"E
A bell tower that emerges from a lake, and that can be reached on foot when it freezes.
No, it is not a bizarre work of contemporary art but the result of the destruction carried out decades ago by the Curon Venosta community.
Located in the province of Bolzano, the village now stands on the eastern shore of Lake Resia. But first it was where the waters are today. This is because those who see this beautiful alpine scenery do not know that the lake is of artificial origin and that its creation was to the detriment of the original Curon.
The current Lake Resia was born in 1950 following the construction of a dam for the production of hydroelectric energy. Two existing and smaller lakes were joined: the original Lake Resia and Lake Curon.
The initiative dates back to 1910 and has never met the favor of the local community. Above all of the inhabitants of Curon Venosta, forced to abandon the houses and to see these first destroyed and then submerged by the waters.
The only building spared from devastation is the bell tower of the Church of Santa Caterina, dating back to 1357 and considered a historical monument.
Today it is the resounding symbol of this dark page of Italian chronicles and has been restored. The last dates back to 2009 and required a lowering of the water level, with a total expense of 130 thousand euros.
The story was told in the novel "Io resto qui" (2018) by Marco Balzano and by the documentary "Il paese sommerso" (2018) by Georg Lembergh. It is also possible to find historical and photographic documents at the Alta Val Venosta Museum. It is a goal that lovers of these areas cannot miss, in the name of a story whose echo has never went out.
