The intro: some of you know I have migraines. I have them often, very often and I am always on the search for preventive measures which do not involve medication with side-effects even more gruesome than the migraine. One helpful action is action (sorry, for the only mildly funny pun). Precisely endurance training like jogging, swimming or biking. As I do not like the latter very much I have chosen the jogging routine. Therefore I have two running tights which are in heavy rotation and heavy duty, as my thighs love to cuddle with themselves (meaning: I have no thigh gap) 😂
My dark red trousers is now hurt from the constant cuddling. The fabric is thin, starts to peel and already has one bigger and a smaller hole. As the rest of the trousers is ok and I so love its dark red colour I want to repair the tights.
With the help and support of @kimmac and @cryptocariad and two very nice shop assistants I tackled this endeavour.

I bought a small stripe of blue swimsuit fabric, as they did not have something more similar to my legging ‘s fabric. I was advised to use microtex needles which I, being well-behaved, also bought. The rest of the week was sadly filled with headache and sorrow, as my father suddenly had to go back into hospital. Only today I found the time and concentration to start the sewing.

First step: pinning the slippery fabric with an excess of needles to the inside of my leggings. Then I removed the base of my sewing machine to expose the free arm (a first for me 😱), change the needle and inserted the thinnest microtex needle (a mistake, I know now).

Second step: Sew the beast patch with a zig-zag stitch on.
This second step escalated a tad…. First the advised thinnest needle broke. Ok, no problem I changed it and used a bigger one, as I found the two layers of fabric not so delicate. But then the f********* (Germans curse very hard, you must know, I guess it’s genetic… hmmm maybe it’s only me 😅) thread constantly ripped. I changed the tension, the needle, but nothing helped. Only at the very end I had the brilliant idea to change the thread which was the real culprit.

Back to my sewing technique. I firstly sewed the edges of the patch and then to firmly fasten the patch on the inside of the pants, I sewed several times length- and crosswise. After this I pulled the pants on their right side and darned the little hole by sewing, still with the zig-zag stitch, several times over it. I hope this will not be too rough on my delicate (😂😂) thigh skin.
I wanted to directly run into the sun and test this mending, so you must wait roughly half an hour.
Tick – tock – tick – tock – tick – tock – tick – tock – tick - ——

I am back, and the patch was wonderful, not scratchy at all. The only minus is, the tiny hole I didn’t mended with the zig-zag stitch has grown bigger, so that the patch is showing. I will wash the trousers and darn it afterwards. I am not sure how durable my mending is… time will show 😊
And by the way, don’t be fooled by my step amount, this was mostly me walking in the sun…

I have found I must use jersey/stretch needles to sew activewear on my machine. "Universal" point needles give me skipped stitches and jammed bobbin threads. Great job finding the right combination of thread, needle, and tension!

Next time (I will repair the second pant peg) I will follow your advice. I guess the shop assistants did not remembered that I will not only use the swimsuit fabric but that I will use the needle to sew through both layers and the running tights are not so thin. The microtex needle is perhaps only for very thin materials.
Do you have perhaps a recommendation for the thread? At last I used a not too thin acrylic thread.

Use synthetic thread, for sure. The best quality available in my area is Gutermann brand. And I use Schmetz needles, also the best. Interesting that when I want quality it often has a German name :)

Although my sewing machine is an old Sears Kenmore (about 30 years old, heavy and metal, still runs well)

Great repair, excellent work and now you know your machine so much more! Tension is very tricky on machines, it's very frustrating when the thread breaks, glad you found a solution 😊.

Thank you 🙏Tension for me is lottery 😂 My machine has no real instructions and as I never attended a sewing course, I am doing guesswork. I think I really should read something about sewing or try to get some schooling ...

😅

I so clearly visualised this chain of events and laughed out loud, @neumannsalva .... sorry ... I am really happy you got there in the end !

You laugh - I cry... no, not honestly. I also found it funny 😂 Moreover as I have no idea about how to adjust tension or how to react to speak all fabrics. My machine has only very superficial instructions and nobody besides me, knows it. The machine is a mystery 😂
Someday I must attend a sewing class, I guess this would help 😁

The worst part about well matched thighs is that there is no easy fix for wearing out the inside seams of pants and jeans. I have tried patching, darning, rebuilding, etc and the fixes never last as long as the rest of the pants.
Glad you learned more about your machine!

A big yes to this. I lost so many pants to the inner thigh rubbing. I have corduroy pants I love, but fixing them did not last long. I will test it out with the jogging pants. The fabric for the fixing was cheap and the time I spent on sewing is no lost time... maybe it will last some runs.
I found a wonderful mending account on instagram. There was a beautiful method to mend jeans. I guess you already know this method, but I will post the photo nevertheless 😂

Lol, that is definitely not my method of repair, but probably works better...

Oh my dear! I am very sorry that your father is back in the hospital. I hope this is not for long. Of course you were nervous and you started having migraines. You correctly decided to go walking. it strengthens blood vessels and eases migraines. in case of these problems, it is still good to make a contrasting douche in the morning. it's not as bad as it seems ))) I have been doing this for almost two years, and also because of problems with blood vessels. my husband also has migraines but not as often as you. at first he did not want to listen to me in this but now and he does it in the morning :) You are right about drugs and their side effects. It's great that despite the headaches you had a pleasant experience. and I hope that your pants will serve you for a long time.

Nice job on the repair.
