If you could separate the pine cones from the needles in some way, you could use them for fire starters.
I used to be pretty good at splitting wood before my back went bad. Now I can split a few pieces with wedges and a sledge hammer, and then I'm done for the day. Using a splitting maul is more difficult for me than using wedges and a sledge hammer.
Yeah they do start fires well, the hard part is the separating. This year was just a heavy flow year for the pines.
The sledge has the ability to use different swing mechanics and still impart a large force. The maul has to have a solid swing to make it work right. You would do well to have a splitter, even an electric one, to save your back.
