Human rights violations in Aceh (KKA intersection tragedy)

Today 19 years ago, it was a sad and sad day for us Acehnese, 46 people dead, 10 people reported missing and 156 wounded in that terrible event, today we (Aceh) commemorate the tragedy, we know him with the tragedy KKA intersection.

The tragedy of KKA intersection was a serious violation of human rights perpetrated by the Indonesian National Armed Forces who at that time was known as the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia, the incident took place in North Aceh precisely at the junction towards the company of Paper Kraft Aceh on May 3th, 1999.

Chronological incident

On April 30, 1999, there were reported missing 001 / Pulo Rungkom missile detachment troops, according to reports circulating that military personnel were infiltrated with Cot Murong villagers while performing a 1 Muharram event, the Missile Detachment Units informed that there were indeed members has yet to be discovered, so the 001/Cot Rungkom Missile Detachment Units side was forced to search massively with the help of other military units such as mobile brigade units.

When searching for missing personnel, the military reportedly arrested the 20 citizens by force and committed acts of violence, the arrested youth claimed to have experienced various acts of violence such as beatings and threats. Villagers also experienced the same thing, the military also reportedly threatened to shoot citizens if missing military personnel were not found.

A few days later, exactly on May 3rd, 1999. Four army trucks were again combing Cot Murong and Lancang Barat villages, local residents successfully drive away the truck. On the incident, the villagers headed to the headquarters of the Military Rayon Command, Actually, the military and the villagers have made an agreement that "the military will no longer comb the villages." In fact, the military violated the agreement and prompted local villagers to take a demonstration to the Military Rayon Command headquarters.

During a discussion with the Commander of the Military Rayon Command, the residents' representatives also protested against the military treatment of violence committed against the 20 arrested youths.

When representatives of citizens are having a discussion, It turned out that the volume of military forces guarding the demonstration increased, I prefer to call it a siege rather than guarding the demonstration, as the people start to get restless and start throwing rocks at the military headquarters and burning 2 motorcycles.

Moments after the stoning and burning of motorcycles, it was reported that two army trucks from the Air Defense Artillery unit arrived and started shooting people blindly, a few days after the tragedy it was also reported that some bodies were found to be weighted by the river, allegedly the disposal technique resembles a disposal technique performed on the previously tragedy of the Idi Cut tragedy.

After the incident

It was reported by the Aceh human rights NGO that in the case of seven deaths were underage. The Indonesian government through its defense minister Wiranto denied the incident was "illogical if the state apparatus oppress the people of Aceh because they are there (Aceh) assigned to protect the people". The military claimed that they were using rubber bullets, in fact, doctors found 38 dead bodies caused by bullets and tin bullets were also found in injured victims.

Even more strange, Wiranto, as Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, will send a special military unit of the Troopers of the riots to find the KKA intersection provocate incidents, despite having strong evidence but still the human rights abuses in Aceh are still not punished.

This is how we are Acehnese, and to this day we are still struggling to prosecute criminals in Aceh, or even we will demand all the sins committed by the Indonesian government in our land, the Land of the martyrs

Until today no one has been brought to justice after these heartbreaking incidents, neither side claims to have committed violence against the people, the Indonesian government claims that the Indonesian military is unlikely to abuse Acehnese because the military is only assigned to protect the Acehnese, the military claims that they using rubber bullets as a form of protection from attacks by citizens who attack military headquarters with stones, while the doctors handling the victims claimed that the dead and injured were caused by live ammunition.

The government can say anything, in fact dozens of our brothers have become victims and cannot be revived and we remain the Acehnese who bear it, if this justice built by the Republic of Indonesia then congratulation because you have successfully made us lose children, husband, wife, brother, sister, and our brothers.
