Discovering ancient settlements of salt farmers (CISAH Activities-2)

in #aceh8 years ago

An area on the north coast of Aceh, today, known as Syamtalira Bayu. Syamtalira are words in a foreign language that we believe comes from Central Asia. We found that in Kurdish, "syamt" it means the soil contains salt, and the "lira" means: here. The name of the area thus means: here soils containing of salt (saline). It was something not at all far from the fact, because Syamtalira Bayu is very well known as of salt production area to the present days, although some salt fields, now, many be transformed into fish ponds because the profit is more promising.

CISAH in exploration activities have discovered a large areas of land that is believed to be a settlement of the salt farmers in ancient times. As we know, the salt is also one of the most sought commodity in the past. The discovery and the opening of the salt fields also will determine the wealth of a country. Salt Satyagraha (Salt March) movement led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930 could be an example of that salt is also often determine the fate of the nation.

Ancient settlements for the salt farmers Syamtalira Bayu, today, is called Simatang because that is an area located in the midst of wetlands (fishponds). Historical evidence convincing that is a bustling settlement in ancient times, was the discovery of ancient pottery fragments, whether it's locally made, China and Thailand, coming from various eras, from the 14th century until the 16th. And because it is in the areas has the potential to produce the salt, we are confident that the inhabitants in that ancient settlement, has lived on salt production, other than income from the sea.
