Land subsidence in coastal areas of Aceh has made the area was inundated by the tide, and it is already under way since centuries ago. Therefore, many land areas that were once dry land settlement, then became wetlands, which in recent days turned into land for livelihoods by making it areas of ponds. Such also happened to the ancient city of Sumatra, situated on the northeast coast of Sumatra.

But not only that natural factors that have caused this ancient city in decline and abandonment. Changes in the political situation and the transition to a trading center that was in another coastal city, led by ruler who is stronger and able to ensure the comfort and safety of the traders, also are factors causing the city into ruins, which slowly sank down into the earth, and its history were fading along with that.

Long span of time, and under natural conditions as mentioned above, the ancient city of Sumatra ultimately only leaving heritage objects, which proves development and rapidity of a trading city on the Silk Road maritime in the days of its history, in the 13th century until the 16th.

The Dutch orientalist who came with the colonial has initiated various studies archeology at the ancient city of Sumatra at the beginning of the last century. Famous Dutch scholar and anthropologist, C. S. Hurgronje, is the the first who report to the Dutch colonial government about the discovery of ancient graves in the ancient city Sumatra. Various archaeological studies followed even documenting a large number of ancient gravestones there.

Unfortunately, viable efforts by orientalists to various archaeological studies in this ancient maritime city, disconnected and does not get the attention it should, in subsequent periods. After the Dutch documenting various historical heritage of Sumatra city, early in the last century, it is then no meaningful documentation efforts.
