A diamond on Maritime Silk Road in the Malacca Strait

Lhokseumawe is region located in a bay on the Strait of Malacca, on the north coast of Aceh. In ancient times, this area is known as the "Teluk Samawi" because of its association with the history of the ancient city of Sumatra.

Archaeologists said that humans have inhabited this area since the Stone Age. This is evidenced by the discovery of kitchen waste shells (kjokkenmoddinger) derived from Mesolithikum period (Middle Stone Age) in Lhokseumawe.

But a beginning Lhokseumawe real fame is since the region became a bustling port and docks in the Strait of Malacca shipping lane in Sumatra Kingdom era (13th-16th century). During that time, the region is, in particular, a settlement area for sailors of the Kingdom of Sumatra, who exploring almost all parts of Southeast Asia. It has been proved by the existence of an ancient burial sites where several cruise experts and navigators names, mentioned on their tombstones.

Based on that, it can be believed, that the various science and technology related to the shipping and port management have been developed in this area since the era, and has become an important contribution to the trade in the world at that time. Because of that, Teluk Samawi, or today Lhokseumawe, can be dubbed as a diamond in maritime silk route.
