The Martian is sci-fi movie directed by acclaimed director Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon as Mark Watney. Quick Plot

The movie was set in the near future with a crew from the Ares III exploration to Mars left behind after an unexpected incident forcing a mission abort. Mark Watney, a qualified botanist, was thought to be dead by his crew, survived the incident after performing self surgery to attend his own wounds.

Left alone on Mars, Mark Watney uses his knowledge and whatever equipments left behind by the mission for his own survival. He was able to produce an indoor greenhouse farm and creates water by extracting hydrogen from leftover fuels used by the mission's spacecraft.

Soon, NASA back on earth discovered and realised Mark Watney's survival and soon, a communication attempt was established by both. NASA was able to provide Mark with valuable advice to help extend his food ration. Plans were made on earth to send food to Mars but ended in disaster as the mission was rushed and operation compromised.

As Mark Watney's survival dwindles, a last resort was made on the returning Hermes to U-turn back to Mars and rescue the stranded astronaut. This meant there will be an additional of several years to the crews' stay in space, but all of them agreed to the extension unanimously. The rescue mission was a success and Mark and the crew returned back to earth several years later.

Review

The Martian is a believable sci-fi space exploration movie. It sticks to a simple stranded and rescue mission, with minimum technical (or space) mistakes. The film focuses on the stranded astronaut and how he dealt with emotional mentality and how he uses all knowledge to survive.

Matt Damon gave a pretty good performance and other supporting casts were equally good to give The Martian a light hearted settings with a few jokes here and there. This was quite a contrast to Ridley Scott's previous blockbuster (Alien, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down), which were usually darker and serious.
