AAA Review - Interstellar (2014) - Another Christopher Nolan masterpiece

in #aaa5 years ago

Interstellar is the 2014 sci-fi space/time exploration movie written, produced, and directed by the talented Christopher Nolan (Dark night, Inception). The film grossed over $600 million worldwide, a good result considering the genre, and won an Academy for best visual effects.

Quick Plot

Interstellar is set in the future, several decades from now, where humanity is endangered by worldwide calamity. Earth is running out of food and the only viable crop is corn. Our protagonist, Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), is an ex NASA pilot who lives by being a corn farmer with his son and daughter, Murphy.

Murphy had been disturbed by strange phenomenon in her bedroom. Patterns forming on the floor after a dust storm and books falling off the shelves. However, her complaints were ignored by Cooper who deduced that they were nothing more than magnetic fields around their home.

At the same time, a secret NASA facility were still in operation with the primary objective of sending humans to liveable planets in the distant space. Astronauts had been sent out to survey potential planets and this time, Cooper was recruited to pilot the Endurance to the habitable planets together with scientist Dr Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway).

The mission wasn't successful on the first planet and they lost a crew. At the same time, 23 years had lapsed while they spent an hour on the planet. This is due to the proximity of this planet to a black hole resulting in extreme time dilation. The second mission to another planet resulted in more time dilation and the crew lost another 51 years.

By this time, the craft was too badly damaged. Cooper was forced to eject himself into space, so close to a huge black hole, where time and space became interchanged. Cooper found himself floating along an endless rows of bookshelves, with each representing a different time period. The bookshelf was the one in his daughter's bedroom. Trying to communicate with his daughter at different time, we learnt that Cooper was the one who created the patterns during the dust storm, making the books dropped, and manipulating the hands of Murphy's watch. He was able to send valuable data of space-time in the form of morse code through the watch to Murphy, who went on to solve the equation needed for humanity survival and colonizing habitable planets.

Soon, Cooper was rescued form space and reunites with Murphy, who is now an old lady nearing death in a hospital bed.

Review

Interstellar is a typical Christopher Nolan mind freaks movie. If you had watched Memento or Inception, you would know what I mean. The film introduced black holes, time dilation, and other science fiction to the audience. Anyone who do not have a knowledge of space time will have difficulty appreciating the movie.

As a sci-fi movie, we do not need to bother with the scientific accuracy. However, there were several plot which I did not like, mainly the last part where Cooper entered the bookshelf place. This was explained to be the work of future humans (aka aliens). I find this to be rather convenient and unconvincing. Whatever we can't explain? Just blame it on the aliens.

Interstellar was lauded with its music score, created by Hans Zimmer, a regular in Nolan's movie. While the music were great, I find that it doesn't blend well into the movie. On some occasion, they sound too loud with low pitch volume that becomes disturbing to the audience.

Another aspect was the visual effect, which won an Academy Awards. Frankly, I don't see anything spectacular with it. The depiction of black hole and worm hole were not too impressive to me. And the bookshelf scene wasn't new, we had seen that in Inception and Dr Strange.

I just read your post on fighting abuse against spt abusers well my post has spt giveaway included if you think it is completely unrelated plus its a way to promote it in fact

If you are talking about this post https://steemit.com/palnet/@khussan/photography-contest-1-your-best-nature-shot then I don't think it is justifiable to use the spt tag. Giving away spt is not a reason for using the tag especially when your contest has nothing to do with Splinterlands. Your other post https://steemit.com/palnet/@khussan/steemmonsters-splinterlands-dragonling-bowman-winner is fine, even if it contains only 2 lines of text. Many would consider that as spam and flag it. But I will not. Next time, when using the spt tag, do put in more effort and make sure it is Splinterlands related.

fine i get it bye bye splintertalk never gonna use it again

Hey, @jrvacation! I read your Interstellar review. I can see from your review that the music this movie offers may not go well with the movie. It also gave me a chance to rethink what was described as alien activity. Your review led me to think of Interstellar in many ways. Thank you for sharing a good review with candid thoughts and sharp critique.
