우리나라 최초 엘리베이터는 언제 어디에 설치되었을까?
우리나라에 처음 엘리베이터가 설치된 것은 1910년 조선은행 건물이었다. 당시 중앙은행이었던 조선은행에 화폐를 운반하기 위해 수압식 승강기가 설치되었다. 사용된 제품은 오티스 엘리베이터였다.
(조선은행은 해방 후 한국은행으로 바뀌고, 조선은행 본관 건물은 한국은행 건물로 사용되다 오늘날에는 한국은행 화폐박물관으로 이용되고 있다)

승객용 엘리베이터
그 후 1914년 조선호텔에 처음으로 승객들이 이용할 수 있는 엘리베이터가 설치된다. 사용된 제품은 역시 오티스 엘리베이터였다.
1910년부터 1945년까지 약 150대의 엘리베이터가 설치된다. 1926년 조선총독부 건물에 엘리베이터 12대가 설치되고, 1927년 세브란스 병원에도 설치된다. 한국인이 처음으로 설치한 것은 화신백화점 건물이었다. 화신백화점은 1931년 만들어졌는데, 1937년 불에 탄 이후 다시 지어졌다. 지상 6층, 지하 1층 건물이었다. 이때 엘리베이터 4대와 에스컬레이터가 설치된다.
당시 엘리베이터의 속도는 1분당 10미터. 20층 아파트에 일반적으로 사용하는 엘리베이터 속도가 분속 100미터니 1/10 속도다. 4층을 올라가는데 1분 넘게 걸린다.
그렇군요. 엘리베이터는 역시 자본의 산물이군요.
