Welcome To Our New Users: Financial Expectations

in #minnows9 years ago (edited)

Welcome New-Users!  (Minnows)

It is great to see so many new-users signing up and checking out SteemIt.  It can be a tough learning curve if you are new to the Blockchain and Crypto.   Technically I am still a minnow, yet things change quickly as you develop your account.  As your Steem Power grows your voting power grows, your curation rewards grow, your following tends to grow.  Like any new job or industry you will learn some tricks and your skills get better.  Add to the that the potential for the price of Steem to grow, and the time you spend on SteemIt, could be well worth it.  As with all investments there are no guarantees.

There are some who push the best case studies, or "Get Rich Quick" ideas about the platform,  (it is possible, but not the typical results) but I am not excited about having a bunch of frustrated users, who are thinking they are doing something wrong because they haven't hit the Jack Pot on their fourth post.   I subscribe to the "promise less, deliver more" ideal.

Let's Talk About Some Financial Expectations:

(Everything thing I write here is based on my perspective and not meant to be seen as an official guide)

  1. You will likely not trend or earn a lot right away, it takes time to build a following.
  2. Like anywhere else that you join or work your influence builds over time.
  3. There are voting bots and not all votes are equal.  Votes are weighted with the Steem Power the account holds (At least for now) So, accounts that have been established and that hold a lot of Steem Power are the votes you want if your goal is earning.
  4. Flags and down-votes happen.  When someone flags or down-votes your post it can reduce or remove the value of the votes you have received, changing the potential payout of your post.  Don't "bank" on having those rewards until the pay-out has occurred.
  5. You will see posts calling out other users, criticizing the site, making allegations, I got caught up in this when I was new and it wasn't helpful.  My suggestion is to make sure you understand the site and the users a bit, before you get sucked into the rabbit hole of "It isn't fair or so and so is cheating".
  6. Just have fun, post about what you know or are interested in.  Post some questions, find some challenges, make comments. More on this in my next minnow post.
  7. If you quit your job to work on SteemIt, make sure you can afford to make that decision, the site is in beta and still under development.  Market conditions, the site, the reward pool and many other things are subject to change without warning.
  8. Make some friends!  Networking is a part of this game.

Take care in the oceans of SteemIt, one post can hurt your reputation.  Don't drink and Steem.  ;)  (kidding, err mostly)

Best of luck (plus some patience and effort) there is no guarantee of success - like anything else, keep trying and you will get better at it and also learn some of the finer points of success.  Welcome and enjoy remember you are among those savvy enough to recognize this is a sexy, cutting edge experiment, rough around the edges, but really cool for those who can handle it.

Say Hi in the comments!

Thnks... Really appreciate ur post.... New users shud b aware

Good advice 😀

Thank you! :)

Excellent advice to newcomers as well as oldtimers. Thank you for sharing. ☆☆☆☆☆😎

I am glad you enjoyed it, I write it to help keep it in the forefront of my mind. ;)

Me also.

Good points.
I'm expecting to retire in just under six months...! I feel this is a healthy expectation...drips with sarcasm

It seems that if you are posting "high value" posts, then can start earning "something" right away, as larger accounts understand the value you create and upvote and possibly resteem your posts!

From the two accounts I have started on here, I feel that commenting will be the best way for most newcomers to earn and grow at the start. I don't make much per post yet...partially because I don't have a lot of value to provide; humor is great, but doesnt carry the same weight. I find most of the Steem I earn and followers come from commenting! And not the bs copy and paste comments.

I completely agree with your strategy! I find it is still very beneficial (as well as something I enjoy) to read and comment on other's posts. Sometimes the payout from a comment will surprise me! Good addition.

Totally. And works especially well in my case, as it's a lot easier to comment with humor than it is to make an entire post.
A benefit of comments that I forgot to mention is that you can/should only make a certain number of posts, and since you want quality or quantity, you can only produce so many posts however anyways.
But with comments, you can make as many as you want. The more the better!..without having to worry about posting too much.
Other people's posts essentially create a consistent stream of user-generated content which you can tap into with comments!

A lot of good advice, some of which I should keep reminding myself of.

Me too. :)

Great post..new users need to know this isn't a get rich quick scheme, the faster they learn this the less frustrated and better success they will have.
Too many are joining us and thinking the site is a scam because they are seeing long time Steemians making hundreads if not thousands and they make only cents and it frustrates them.
I also wrote a post on the best possible way for minnows to gain traction and become successful.

Good, Practical, Realist information. Thank you ! Even though I started awhile back I lost Inet service and was finally able to get back on, there have been a lot of changes and a lot more help, so many guides now. There really are so many people that are helping everyone, it is great actually ! I have made many comments prior to now but have lost my connections. I am really looking forward to reconnecting with all my friends here and hopefully start posting soon. I would like to thank you folks for what you are doing here, all of us noobs need all the help we can get, again, Thank You.

Welcome back, I will give you a follow.

Thank you very much ... 5:31 am here, i think i might need to sleep, curating is a hard life, lol, i like it tho ! thank You again !

Very good and pratical advice. I have more or less the same experience. Give yourself time and go for long term.

Climbing up the steemit is more of a marathon than a sprint, though the effort makes the view from the top all the more rewarding i'm sure

There are some who are just really good at grabbing attention in writing. For most of us, it takes a while to gain an audience and find our topics.

Just so you don't get sucked in by the 'you inspire me', from that jim guy who just commented here, he has copy pasted the exact comment (missing the word 'know' to make him more foolish) to a ton of people. I took a look at his comments after a friend got one from him on an older post. Saw that you were one of this targets and thought I'd let you know. Thinking it might be time to write a post about unwritten rules for newbies, lol.
