"dig up your lawn" challenge for @happymoneyman #23steemCreated with Sketch.

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

So my new friend @happymoneyman set a challenge to his followers (check out my resteem) to dig up a part of the lawn(or garden as we call it over here lol) and convert it into a veg patch. So here is mine and the Mrs' attempt.

OK so above are the semi-finished photos, like most days in Wales it absolutely pissed it down so I couldn't quite finish, but fingers crossed he says that's OK and I can finish it next weekend

OK originally this area was full of bushes, shrubs and flowers(and not grass) as you can see, so was actually a bit more work than it should have been. We took every bush/shrub and and replanted it but the flowers went to the allotment in the sky. We took out every root ball and stray weed and made sure we didn't leave anything that could grow back. We managed to fill 8 recycling bags full of garden waste.

After the clearing came the "turning over" of the soil. Although very tedious the big yellow thing in the sky made a very short appearance and this helped the time pass

And one for the lads(don't tell her she will kill me)

So I hope you found this kind of interesting and if all else fails you got to see the wife's arse.

Few more things:
Yes I know I don't have a before picture, for some reason it didn't save to my phone.
Yes I did build the featheredge fence in the finished pic and yes I know I must concrete the final post in, but like I said rain stopped play.
Yes it does still look very "rocky", I promise you I will remove all the bigger ones and rake it flat before I put the garden to bed for the winter.
And finally Yes I did do some work, it's just I held the camera. ;-)

Thanks for dropping in. Have a great day and happy gardening.

I have seen ma y people giving up lawns for gardens. I'm thinking I will join the movement next year!
Lots to consider and more space for herbs and plants. Love it!

@originalworks

It's the way forward. I'll never have enough space to be fully dependent, but I can sure try to keep the food bill to a minimum by growing my own potatoes, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots etc. With the soil I took out, I'm hoping to build and fill some raised beds at the back of the garden for other odds and sods.

Wonderful! I am looking at digging up a portion of my front lawn as well to add more vegetable room for next year. Just have to convince @mwoodall to allow me to do it ;) It is not as common on our side of the pond, to have a garden in the front instead of the rear, but I hope to change that.

I know, right? I don't care mowing lawn, so less of it the better I'll be.

You may be the trend setter and have the rest of your street follow suit. What the worst that can happen?? You grow your own organic, non-gmo veg and the rest of the street spend money buying it from the supermarket!

love this! I'm a petsitter and get to see a lot of peoples gardens...the veg patch is really catching on and so revolutionary! :)

It's funny how things come round I'm cycles. 60yrs ago every house would have a small veg patch to supply beans and potatoes for a Sunday roast. We are just rediscovering what our grandparents knew and our parents forgot.

Fantastic work my friend. 20 SBD is coming your way.
I love to see how much work you guys did. Heck yea!

Thanks a lot for participating. It's pretty rad that we can do things like this together when we're all the way across the pond from each other.

Cheers and keep up the awesome work.

Thank you for the challenge. It was the motivation to get us started. I promise to finish it and keep you updated. Thanks again and let's hope we get more people on board

I'd love to see updates. Cheers.
Hopefully more people pile on.
Glad to sun came out for a moment.

You say a moment and that's exactly all it was. In Wales if the sun is out longer than 5hours we call it a summer and a heatwave!!

Haha that's great. Good work timing the heat wave.

Just looking at the pictures makes me tired!
I know it's a lot of work to convert a part of the yard to garden, it looks like you're going to have a nice garden space when you're done.

Thank you. It's a good size space and to be honest it's more work maintaining the flower bed that it will be to keep on top of the weeds is the veg patch. The space offers us enough room to grow a variety of different vegetables that will top up, or should I say keep our food bill down next summer.

Great work a great transformation (the garden not your wives ass, not saying it bad though ;) ). More people need to do this get growing again become sustainable.

Totally agree... With the growing again and becoming sustainable and that the wife's arse isn't too bad

That's a Great effort so nice to see this thanks for sharing this with us :)

Well wait till it's finished and full of vegetables. Looking forward to next year now.

Great work with this again.

Do you mind if I feature you in a little video.
It will be styled like the one I shot for @owenwat, the other garden winner.

Let me know. I'd love to make a vid and hopefully send a few people to your page .

Cheers.

Of course you can. If you need more info/pics let me know, I'm happy to help.

Great. Your pictures will work perfect.
I'll let you know this week when I post an update.
Cheers.
