The picker

I wonder what a Dutch child answers if you ask what the word "picker" means.
Possibly it associates it with the Dutch word "pikken" which means stealing.
An interesting Dutch word is "pikkedief" which means stealing thief".

My first thought was "picking up dirt". The garbage people dump on the streets or out of their cars while driving. Someone cleans it up and this person will probably not throw his garbage bags outside. If you clean up dirt daily you know how much effort it takes to clean up. Some use a " helping hand" aka "teacher" but most I see only wear gloves and need to bend forward for each piece of garbage they see. A good name for those people could be "picker". They are the ones who pick up daily. I hope they get paid well or they use people who dumped their garbage into nature. It would be a good way to teach these dirt devils a lesson. Not only for a few days or weeks but for some years. I will never understand why some people save all their garbage of a week or month and drive it over to the country to dump it next to a land road.

According to google picker means toothpick or pickaxe. That can be confusing. You ask for a picker and a mattock is handed over to clean your teeth with.
