For the lazy cook.

in #qurator4 years ago

We ate soup today.

Yesterday I wrote about baked beans and mashed potatoes... mashed potatoes made out of a package that contains a powder.
I promised @heartbeat1515 I would show it to her if I bought it again.
Since that might take longer (this is "food for in case of need which my children can easily make) I show another powder many people in the Netherlands use to make soup out of.

Tomatosoup in a bag.

Here it is... the ingredients to make 1.5 liters of tomato soup.

I dug a bit in it. In some cases, there are dried "vegetables" and vermicelli added to it.

The light changed the color of the powder but it is red.

I found one vermicelli and is that tiny green at the left of it vegetable of a herb?
This brand "Honig" is not very generous. The powder cost me over 1 euro (last summer) and it is cheaper to buy a can tomato paste to make soup out of.

I add ingredients myself.

1. Macaroni/pasta

Because I found 1 vermicelli I use pasta instead of rice, one cup is enough.

2. Meatballs

Yesterday I bought 1 pound minced meat (turkey). I made burgers out of it and these meatballs for the soup.

3. Tomatoes and garlic

I will add some tomatoes and garlic. How old do you think they are?

If you follow me you recognize them from the pot at the right. I grew them myself and this was in 2015. I use nearly 5-year-old tomatoes and garlic for my soup.

4. mint

The recipe is very simple.

1.5 liters of cold water, next you add the powder to it and stir while you heat it up.
Add the meatballs and pasta and tomatoes and warm it up for about 15 minutes (low fire).
My small blender was good for the tomatoes and garlic.

I made the soup earlier today and skipped the 15 minutes on a low fire till the children were home. It saves gas and pasta can soak/get soft this way too.
Once the children were home I made it warm.

A thick soup came out of it thanks to the meatballs and pasta.
Enough to fill the stomach.

It sounds great soup out of a bag but if it comes to it, it takes as much time as making your own soup out of tomato paste or tomatoes unless you add nothing to it.
If you do add ingredients using tomato paste is a cheaper solution if you do not have your own tomatoes or can afford to buy them.
Tomatoes are expensive here so I rarely buy them. If perhaps 2-3 for a salad or on an omelet.

Thank you for the info. 👍🏻

This would be the first time I saw a tomato soup in powder form. Same as the mash potato one but don't worry no need to rush to show the picture, I'll be waiting until the time comes.

Your tomatoes really catch my attention. I once heard that preserve fruits and veggies taste better and I believe that.

Just one question, how did you make that tomatoes shinny and looks like it still have it crunchiness even after 5 years?

I don't think I did anything special. They were picked early and still green. Red they became inside. I just eashed them, put the raw tomatoes in a jar with garlic (you can add red or green pepper slices too if you like) and filled the pot with a mixture of water, vinegar, sugar and some herbs which I boiled first and poured over it. Next I closed the jar and put it upside down.

All my jars are saved at a dark cool place. Only (sun)light can change the color of food which doesn't mean you cannot eat it.

You can try some little jars yourself. In most cases the taste is better the longer it stands, at least 6 weeks. So what is made during (the end of) summer can be eaten during winter.

Enjoy your day. 💕

Thank you for sharing your recipes. I never tried this. When I did, I'm sure to post it here even though that might take a longer time.

@heartbeat1515 You are welcome.

Today I made white beans with potatoes for the children. I made photos and will post them in the next days. ❤️

I'll look for your post. I'm wondering what do mean by white beans by the way. One more interesting recipes. I never eat beans with potatoes.
