Fox Tales WK#36 : Announcing contest winners and a new story image!

in #contest5 years ago

If you love writing stories then this contest is for you! Write a one paragraph story about the image pictured above. Be creative, think outside of the box and follow the listed rules!

Hello writers and fellow art lovers! I know I haven’t been posting much over these last few days but I definitely haven’t left. I’ve poked my head in to check up on contest entries, which had me worried up until the last 24hrs. I’m very thankful for week #35’s stories. They were delightful to read since I love all things fantasy!

This image was something I drew up on a cold snowy day. I hope you all find inspiration with this image and enjoy the progress gifs below. :)

The progress...

All my drawings are original sketches drawn digitally by me on the Procreate App using the iPad Pro with Apple Pencil.

With a loose pencil, I began sketching a face. I perfected it by utilizing the liquify tool to adjust the size of the lips and nose.

A quick sweep of color with the round brush tool.

I went back in with the same color and brush, adding more depth to the shadows and sculpting the face.

I lined the face with a darker pencil and then deepened the shadows with that same color using the round brush.

I played around with different brush strokes using the gouache paint tool. My aim was to add more interest to the image. When I settled on one I finished the drawing with my favorite part, highlighting!

WEEK #35 WINNERS & STORIES!

1st place // @theironfelix “Delta Foxtrot”
"Delta Foxtrot, reporting crash-landing clocking three-hundred mikes post-crash. I have yet to successfully contact with surrounding planets and have seemed to fallen and scratch perfectly good nature. However, if I may, we need to send expeditionary forces here to scout out and map this blessed terrain. Delta Foxtrot, this place is like the lost garden of Eve; that's a good thing as we have a chance to truly learn the famed 'State of Nature' these darned philosophers lost sleep over. One problem: it's already inhabited by a figure that resembles us in many ways but acts unlike us. In fact, this be the only giant amongst the whole planet I’ve seen so far. The giant acts so much like the nature around: gentle with the water like the winds are to the trees, resting soundly as still water, skin looking so soft that it competes with the mountains for texture and so huge that methinks this giant plays so nice with nature around. Truthfully, in my space-faring days, this day I found my 'Wanderer over the sea of fog' moment; I begin to understand the ecstasy of such. We needn't even lay a hand so harsh with a nature so quiet like this. Let’s preserve this: not for our sake, nor for the sake of struggle to resurrect our tattered birth-planet; let's do it for our future generations. So they’ll know what the colour green is and to see the purity of blue that flows ever so nicely. To let them hear a bird squawk and fear not a bomb dropping, to hear the flies buzz and not feel sick but... annoyed. To feel what we thought innocence was before and not be tainted as ignorance to a harsh reality. But truly: to know we all can stride towards utopia."
2nd place // @calluna “Echoes”
Everything in the city made me think of her. The concertina-buses she loved to ride, the way they swung round corners. The nights out that ended staggering onto those buses, her jubilant face blushed with exhausted intoxication. The mischief that looked so beautiful on her, lighting her face as her hand drifted under my waistband, the bus rocking us home. The pigeons strutting the pavement with their pitiful mangled feet, their half missing toes, others hobbling entirely on amputated stumps. I’d never noticed it until she pointing it out, then I saw them everywhere; the persevering pigeons. I thought I’d lost track of the endlessly ridiculous hypotheses she came up with to explain it, all too aware of the real reason. Seeing a mismatched toed pigeon strutting across the windowsill made me think of her giggling, murmuring to me so as not to be overheard. I saw her face in every shop window, half distorted, but there, her, for a moment. I’d catch the curve of her cheek, the sheen of her hair, in my peripheral vision and my heart would leap before I had chance to stop it. Only for the realisation of the illusion to be slammed home by my sudden stop before another pedestrian. I passed her on the street every morning, a sudden gesture, a distant laugh, instantly bringing her back to me. Until I looked again, to find a stranger hurrying by. The apartment was worse, everything about it had a shadow of her. The sofa I could never sit in the middle of, the bed I could only get in from one side. The bathroom, without her plethora of toiletries, seemed suddenly larger, filled with a smothering hollow space. Even here, in the middle of nowhere, I see her in the hills.
3rd place // @chrisbarth “The Imaginary Lover-2”
Still thinking of the imaginary lover, the artist went on and drew another drawing (a drawing of a man who seemed to be lying on mountains) which is strange. One early morning, just as she was about to perfect the drawing, her fiancee came in. "what's the image about?!" he asked, feeling guilty of the way he asked and not waiting for her answer, he sat down and asked her with a softer voice "can you tell me about it?". She then nodded and started to tell the story, she said "after the imaginary lover's face was partly whipped, I continued imaging. I imagined her face being complete then after she cried that morning, she decided to take a walk somewhere around the mountains. She walked to a point where the mountains was then very visible to her, she sat down on a little rock and looked up to the rising sun again. This time around, she was shocked to see her imagined lover to be such a huge image that lied on the mountains, so big that his hand could reach for the stars. At this point, she then rushed home, took a pencil and drew what she saw on the mountains." Then the artist concluded "I imagine this drawing to be what the imaginary lover saw when she went to the mountains."
