The Curious Student (original story)
The Curious Student
The curious student stood in the library surrounded by a mountain of intriguing texts. He was drawn to mathematics books with obscure titles and which were covered in dust as if they had not been opened in years. A particular book titled "The Riemann Hypothesis" stood out to him from all the other books on the shelves. "Who was Riemann?" and "What is his hypothesis?" the student thought to himself.
The student began to read the introduction and learned about this old mathematical problem that had be posed by a brilliant mathematician in the 19th century and yet no person had been able to solve in over 100 years. Many greats minds had attempted to find a solution but none had been found. Excited by this mysterious problem that had stumped the worlds greatest minds for over a century the student continued to read on.
To the student's dismay he was presented with a series of symbols and equations that looked like a foreign language to him. The student could not read much further without being completely lost in the meaning of what was being presented to him. However, the students curiosity about what he was reading did not fade. He wanted to understand what all these symbols meant.
The student thought to himself "There is so much for me to learn about this mysterious world of which I only have a small glimpse" and "I need to fill in these gaps in my knowledge". Wasting no time the student set out on his journey. The student began to find some books which he was able to understand and devoured them one after the other. Slowly but surely his knowledge increased and he learned about the mysterious symbols he had encountered before. This was not a quick and easy process but one that would takes years of dedication and hard work.
Eventually the student came to the point where he felt he was ready to take a look at his old nemesis "The Riemann Hypothesis". The student went back to the library and found this book. Without eating or sleeping he read the book from front to back while sitting on the library floor. The student felt a huge sense of accomplishment when he was able to understand the book in its entirety. However, the student soon realized that this was just the beginning of the mountain. Now he had to figure out what the others before him had failed to find. He had to solve the Riemann Hypothesis, but had no idea where to start.
