Message of Mr Mitsugi, Assistant-Director-General, FAO on the occasion of the prize-giving ceremony for the International Day of Forests 2019 Teachers’ video contest at David Lubin Library foyer (Tree-of-Life) on Thursday, 21 March 2019 at 13.05

Esteemed guests, dear colleagues,
As one of several activities organized to promote this year’s International Day of Forests and its theme of ‘Forests and Education’, FAO invited teachers and educatorsfrom round the world to produce a short video to show howthey educate children and youth about the importance of forests and trees. The contest parameters were wide to reflect the different ways in which young people can learn about forests: in a traditional classroom setting, a field trip into the forest, an art or music lesson or even a yoga class.
In response, we received 107 entries from teachers in 40 countries. The quality of the videos was very high, making the final selection difficult, but in the end, the jury made its choice.
It gives me great pleasure to announce that Mr. Ngalim Franklin, Founder and President of The Greens – International Organisation, Cameroon, has been selected as the winner of the International Day of Forests 2019 teachers’ video contest for his innovative, inspiring and entertaining video showing how he and his organization provide local children with interactive opportunities to learn about forests and their many benefits. Honourable mentions also went to Diane Dealey Neill from the United States of America and Lolita Šteinberga from Latvia.

The prize for the contest winner was a trip to FAO headquarters to be with us at this year’s IDF event. Unfortunately, Mr Franklin was unable to join us today, so we have arranged for him to acknowledge his prize via skype from Bamenda. Arrangements will be made for him to travel to a future official FAO event.

Her tree planting programs have seen the organization create 04 Community Tree Nurseries, planted more than 300,000 trees and together with @kedjom-keku we have acquired 1000 hectares of afromontane forest in Kedjom-Keku Village of the Bamenda Highlands of the North West Region of Cameroon for the creation and conservation of Kedjom-Keku Community Forest

@thegreens is currently engaged in Waste Management (Waste Business Hub); Plastic Waste Upcycling, Tire Upcycling and Textile Waste Recycling via @ecodesigns.
Her #EndPlasticPollution Campaign has seen the organization sensitize more than 100,000 people about plastic pollution, upcycled more than 10,000 plastic bottles to create UPB Vertical Gardens, UPB Tree Nursery Pots, etc.

Her Textile Recycling Project (@ecodesigns) is currently training 13 young girls for free in textile recycling and fashion designing and has recycled more than 5000 pounds of textile waste.

Her Tire Upcycling Project is educating and engaging young people in schools and communities to #StopBurningTires and upcycle them to create Mushroom Tire Seats, Tire Flower Pots, etc
