Homestead Garden Harvest & Raising Chickens For Meat & Eggs
We are trying to become self sufficient and off the grid on a budget. This means that we have to grow as much of our own food as possible to reduce our dependence on the grocery stores.
We harvested some sugar snap peas and green beans today. Plus we harvest our own herbs for cooking from our own raised bed herb gardens. And we fish for food as well.
Chicken provide us with meat and eggs on our homestead. Plus the chickens provide fertilizer and reduce the insect population for our gardens.
We semi free range our chickens every day. This reduces the food cost and gives us healthier birds. Our broiler meat chickens are healthier than commercially raised chickens. Ours are much larger as well.
Our little tiny chicks are strong enough to go outside for the first time ever today. We have a chick brooder inside the chicken cottage where the little ones stay until they are large enough to go outside with the others. At night all the birds go back inside the chicken coop for safety.

In the second half of the day I worked inside the chicken coop for a while because it was raining. I cleaned out the chicken coop and put in new bedding. The old bedding goes into the compost bin to be used as fertilizer for next year's garden.
I put in some roosting bars for the chickens to sleep on off the ground. They are getting large enough now and want to roost higher.
I had scraped up some moss behind my wood shop and today I put it around the cabbage plants to use as mulch. This will retain moisture and hopefully keep the roots cooler so the plants do not bolt so badly.
We are setting up an outdoor kitchen were we can cook all summer to keep the heat out of the house.

Thank you. Although the freezing nights did some damage to our garden, we are still processing food that we harvested.
Chicken manure mixed in with the spoil to down below root level can really help prevent frost damage. I'm not sure of the chemistry but it actually helps keep the soil temperature above freezing. Also, if you compost the chicken manure for a few months before using it you'll get much better results with less chance of burning your plants. I use wood chips in the coop and then shovel all that out to the compost pile. Best fertilizer you can get, period.

We use pine shavings as bedding and then compost that.
Yeah, I use pine too. A big pile of composting chicken manure can get so hot inside that it can actually catch fire. You probably notice when it's cold outside and you dig in with the shovel steam rises out. My family made a fortune one year on turnips because we were the only farm in the region that didn't get wiped out with a record low cold snap. The secret....chicken poop :-)

It turned out very well actually. Sadly an August frost (coming soon in the video series) destroyed the sensitive crops just before they were ready to harvest.
Next year will certainly be better now that we know to expect frost any time during summer.

In comments you claimed it freezes all summer long. Then in a video you claimed you read where the first frost is early September. This is why we call you out on your lies. Posted 2 hours ago...at approximately 8:30 AM local time. Sunrise was at 7:36 AM this morning in Lewiston, Michigan. Today was the start of gun deer season in Michigan. Any deer hunter knows the best chance to get a deer is opening morning...and yet here you are on SteemIt AGAIN. Did you get your deer this morning already or are you so addicted to the Internet you just can't step away for a day to fill your freezer with venison (since you are too poor to buy beef)?
Check the weather. I am in for breaks due to intense rain. Very quiet today for opening day.
You really don't know much about anything, do you? Raining on opening day is a gift. The deer can't hear you walking. It is a perfect opportunity to scout your prey. Instead you head inside to put your feet up and drink coffee. Unbelievable.

These videos are from this past August or so.
Spoiler Alert, Lewiston is in northern Michigan where apparently it FREEZES all summer long there.
The garden will be dead soon where he only "harvested" a few beans, peas, and tomatoes.
He had to replant the garden three times this year for some reason or another.
Everything else died by harvest time from one thing or another.
The only thing that actually lived was sunflowers and an unknown type of squash that grew on its own from the compost piles.
I suppose it did not help to introduce highly acidic free compost to an already highly acidic soil.
@homesteadbuilder That pitiful garden was ravaged by critters, then by frost as he didn’t protect it. Lack of watering in the dead sandy desert like conditions didn’t help either.
Actually we watered the garden every day, as needed. Not sure where you got your info but it was not from our videos.
