Similar to the human respiratory system, a cat has a set of lungs that possess numerous chambers, the membrane around the lung organs may suffer from inflammation at times and cause breathing issues for a cat. This condition is referred to as pleurisy and every owner should be aware of this potential issue as well as other related chest problems that can emerge over time. Whether it’s from the environment, infections of other circumstance, checking a cat’s chest condition is essential. A cat could build up fluid in its chest area for many simple reasons and many of the cases observed in the cat caring world will relate to viral, organ failure or general sustained injury. Cats are proud survivor animals and will not come looking for assistance and would rather get on with their lives. However, by interacting and checking a cat regularly, these chest and breathing ailments can be identified early on for a major boost in successful treatment odds.

Fluid that builds up in the chest area is often clean but is susceptible to bacterial infection. When this occurs, the fluid will begin to host potentially harmful infections. This will commonly occur when a cat suffers an injury that has punctured the skin and allowed entry into this space. Common injuries that will infect include bites, scratches and other wounds inflicted from contaminated sources. Blood borne diseases are also a risk and any type of cut should be clean and sealed immediately. A cat will try to deal with breathing problems in its own way, trying to keep up with its regular activities and perhaps even exert a little more than usual. The lack of oxygen will then lead to reduced physical performance and lethargy. An owner may recognise the breathing issue through passive observation means. Seeing a cat that is wide eyed and physically panting is indication of an issue with the respiratory system. This is of immediate concern and should be seen by a vet for treatment as soon as possible.

Failure to recognise respiratory issues can be fatal and a cat could eventually suffer from a number of complications that will lead to death. A cat that appears to be in panic or stress will be an even grater cause for concern as they become self aware of their situation. An owner should regularly check their cats breathing condition and listen closely at times for any possible wheezing or general breathing difficulties. A vet specialist will be able to quickly diagnose the issue and if the fluid in the abdomen cavity area is to blame, immediate action will be taken to attempt chest drainage. A course of drainage and antibiotics will attempt to salvage a cats life in this detrimental situation however there are instances where treatment will not succeed. The cat will eventually suffer from a condition known as pyothorax and pass away. This is a sad situation and should try to be avoided through early identification in the first instance to increase odds of survival.
