Rabies is a term we have all heard about and are at risk from contracting. Animals and humans alike can suffer from rabies and cat owners are at risk if they suffer from a bite from an animal that is infected. Cats are also susceptible to the virus if entering into conflicts with cats around the neighbourhood. Infection in a cat can be somewhat alarming as the usual tendencies of a cat will shift dramatically. Where a cat may have acted with affection and playfulness may become irritable and aggressive. This is a sign of infection and cause for concern.

An infected cat will also suffer from hydrophobia. They will be unable to drink water and become dehydrated. As time continues, their condition will rapidly deteriorate as the head in particular will suffer from many deformations. The jaw will suffer from paralysis and the head will begin to swell, it’s a heart breaking situation for a cat owner but no time should be lost in sourcing a plan of treatment for the infected cat. At this time a cat will be a risk in the household and should be kept quarantined away from people and other animals. Approaching a vet for advice and treatment is recommended as soon as possible.

The best chance of successful treatment is to take action as soon as any sign of bites have taken have been observed. A fresh bite wound could be the first indication of the infection entering the blood. Immediate treatment from the vet is required. If an animal is left to develop the symptoms as mentioned above, treatment will not be effective as manifestation has already occurred.

If living in a country that is deemed rabies free, this is a fortunate situation and no vaccination is often needed. However, areas with the rabies risk will require vaccination to prevent manifestation of the disease. If a cat is to be travelling in risk zones then a specialist procedure should be arranged for inoculation. Once again, rabies is another example of how cat owners should take preventive measures to avoid possibly fatal situation in the long term. Regular checks on a cat’s body will also help to catch any wounds it may have suffered from and will of course maximise the chance of treatment before the disease can incubate and manifest.
