British Cream Shorthair Cat
British Cream Shorthair Cat
Shorthair cats come in many different colours and patterns and it is worth exploring a style that suits personal taste. Due to the vast diversity and amount of cats available for breeding, shorthair cats have been bred to perfection and it is often easier to gain access to a cat that is regarded as a perfect specimen. The shorthair can be classified into two classes that relate to the round faced cat and the other long limbed cats which are distinct in stature. The British Black and White shorthair cats are regarded as exemplary breeds that hold some of the most prominent characteristics of the shorthair, almost becoming iconic. There is a another cat that sits between these colour spectrums and it’s known as the British Cream cat.
As another shorthair breed, it retains the same coat as that of the other shorthairs. With a short and thick coat, the hairs are fine and densely packed together to form a beautiful coat. The colour of this cat is as its name suggests, a cream colour and was sporadically found within the litter of tortoiseshell kittens. The earliest recognition of this type of cat dates back over hundreds of years ago and gave inspiration to breeders to seek consistency of the cream coloured cat. The colour of the coat was sought after and often the inclusion of a tortoiseshell cat would assist the process. The goal of the breeders was to produce a cat that had a pure buttermilk coat with minimal markings and maximum consistency. This was no easy feat and it wasn’t for at least a century after which official recognition was gained through consistent breeding. The British cream has a mellow colour that will shift colour in extreme weather conditions. The most ideal specimens maintain a consistent coat with little marking or patches.
As the other shorthair breeds, the eyes of the British Cream are well rounded and complement its coat colour. The eyes will be typically golden or orange in colour. The British shorthair cats are known to be independent cats that will appreciate their own space to develop their own freedom of right. Owners will come to enjoy the company of this feline companion as it shows gratitude towards its keepers. The minimal grooming effort is also attractive to those who do not want to commit a copious amount of time to grooming the fur with special treatments.
