Steemit - The Morality Of Profiting From Content Creation

in #steemit7 years ago

Yesterday I got into a heated debate about the morals of posting a link to a Total Biscuit video on my Steemit account. I go into a lot of details about the topic of monetization.

I'd just like to add that I would love this type of content on Steemit. Debate can be very beneficial, and far reaching.

Hey :)

I would still love to get together with you and do a live discussion between us. Just talk and find what we agree about and what we disagree about.

Also: I wan't to point out that I didn't want you to get the idea that I was accusing you of purposefully trying to "steal" the content. I understood that you did it pretty much just as "oh I liked this video so I'll post it here as well". I honestly love watching TBs videos.

Also: I shouldn't have said I'm a moralist. I will admit that I didn't understand the word correctly and I shouldn't have used it when I wasn't 100% sure what it meant.

I am not really sure what we would say that has not already been said though. I believe your points are pretty clearly defined.

okay, no problem I just like to talk issues out with people

So I didn't read your whole argumentation and only watched 6 min of the video, but I got a pretty firm opinion on the topic:

I am so harsh to you, because I am about to be even harsher on @gaming-trail

@gaming-trail is right in criticizing your content. I mean you post a 46 min video of somebody else and write 6 lines about it, essentialy a youtube comment. Steemit is a lot about original content. Also I would have loved to see alink to your discussion under this video, instead of patreon links etc.

BUT the approach was a perfect example of what he is not supposed to do, when he sees content like yours! It is pretty much a number one rule to stay positive on steemit. You see posts of "links without article" a lot even @kralizec Is regulary just copy pasting steam trailers with description ;).
But why do you start of so hostile, I am disappointed. Would have thought you are much more self aware. What prevented you from saying "Hey, I would love to see more of your own thoughts on the topic", why did you have to post such destructive criticism as a trail account? You could have also just ignored it, dont vote up, move on, let the system do the work.

It is an important thing to discuss "what is good content", but @gaming-trail started it the wrong way.

As an example how I would loved your post about TB. You mentioned better Single Player games. Maybe give one or two examples of those and explain why their SP is better. Maybe add a screenshot of them for more visual impact :D

I simply dont agree with this line of reasoning based on the idea that 6 lines of text as being an arbitrary standard. One person might view 6 lines of text as being perfectly fine another might not. In all honesty I think it would have been perfectly fine if I simply posted the link with no text at all.

Again this touches on the point of aggregation being a valid service. I believe that sharing content by itself as being a valid act provided I did not attempt to pretend that the content belongs to me. (Which I clearly did not)

Steemit is no different than other forms of social media. The only difference with sharing a link on Steemit vs Sharing a link on Facebook is who makes the money. I dont agree that it is moral for Facebook to profit as a company vs an individual profiting. Individuals making a profit or the corporation is the same thing in my opinion.

Someone is making money from this venture. What is really bad about this kind of reasoning is that it is very unhealthy toward people who focus on aggregating content. Which in turn technically is a type of logical fallacy that can be turned toward everything on the internet.

I simply do not agree with the 6 lines of text idea. Its far better to vote with your upvotes and let the system do its work dynamically. Shaming people for what they post or acting like a moralist toward someone who posts a patreon is a very destructive and toxic attitude in my opinion.

Actually, I have to agree with everything you say. My personal preference is good self-made content or at least thoughtful presented. But if there are people following someone because he always links so cool videos, then they have every right to do that.(you could compare yourself to a radio person playing music of other artists) I just wanna mention that my only unfollows are people who spam my feed with random links.

You are right when you say we should let the system do the work. As a consumer @gaming-trail can ask for your content to be better, but it has to be polite like I stated above.

Hey, I would love to see more of your own thoughts on the topic

you certainly seem like a guy who likes discussions, so I think you would have engaged in that. btw you can quote with ">" even tho it is not actually only looking like you are doing it ;)

Whoops I didn't know that! Honestly this is my first steemit controversy lol
Which is a good thing as it got the blood flowing for a topic think as being relevant especially on a place like Steemit.

As far as more thoughts, I agree I could have put more detail as it is a topic I talk about fairly often. I am currently trying to get a project of my own that blends this kind of game play with DarkSouls style game play. Link to the latest video below.

I saw you have other content normally, I browsed over your posts real quick. You seem to make a lot of dev logs, which is pretty legitimate content. I havent looked to deep into it so I dont want to judge if I like or not.

Seeing that it was more or less a one time thing, I'm even more baffled by the behavior of @gaming-trail, but I am pretty sure he will try to be more constructive after this escalated.

Good luck on your project!

that's a good point. I should have been more positive and I will definitely try to be more positive towards people in the future

Don't let your genuine, constructive criticism get in the way of making sure you don't hurt anyone's feelings!

Definitely not. I am a firm believer that constructive criticism should be provided. If any individual wants to be overly sensitive about it, that's their problem.

My personal view is you can't improve on a shortcoming if you're not aware it exists.

I share your excitement about Patreon and sites like it and the roads they unblock. But I think a sense of community is severely lacking over at Patreon so I want to use other sites like steemit to make up for that.

I started with an "introduce yourself" threat for creators, feel free to come find other creators and share your own stuff. My patreon is there as well.
