Details of his contest can be found here
This is one of Simon Lakes Submarines called the explorer which is on display on Helwig Street in MIlford, which I thought would be something different to share photos of for the Vehicle contests
Why is it there you may ask well Simon Lake , Well Simon Lake was born in Pleasantville New Jersey, but lived in Milford CT from 1907 till his death in 1945.
In 1912 he formed the Lake Torpedo COmpany in Bridgeport CT which built 26 Submarines for the US navy during and after World War 1, his first Submarine for the military the USG G1 in November 1912 set a depth record of 78 Metres(256 Feet)
After the war in 1922 many countries including the United States signed treaties which put limits on the size of Navies . This forced the Lake Torpedo company to close in the Mid 20’s.
After the company Closed Lake continued to work on developing maritime salvage systems

Another shot of the Explorer from a different angle in color.
The Explorer a two man submersible, was Lake’s last submarine built in 1936 which was designed for salvage use and was used in an attempt to salvage the HMS Hussar a British Frigate that sank in 1870 in the East River of New York.
The Explorer now stands proudly to be seen here in MIlford CT

A fascinating potted history of this sub company.
We sometimes forget that there are millions of small firms innovations that help the development a new technology.
There's tons of treasure still to be found in shipwrecks. :)
Yes Indeed small companies often make the break through ts they lead to great leaps in technology but are often forgotten when the big companies take over
True it happens all the time. Good to see that this company is being remembered.
I do agree, there was a school here named after him also but it closed before I over here

Want to have your post on the map too?
Would be nice to look inside.
I wish we could get to see I Sid eit, must be pretty cramped as it is small
Thats too cool. Makes me want one even more!
I think I would love one as well, but perhaps a bit more modern and more roomy this is pretty small
Ya I need a shower and comfortable bed and kitchen and possibly a game room in mine😋
Just the bare essentials nothing fancy :)
Great post. I heard stories of relatives that worked on them during WWII (maternal side of my family is from New Haven/Hartford). Thanks man!
Thats cool to know it makes a photo and post special when someone can relate to the subject like this

Pretty cool, man! I like the hue of the filter on photo one up there. Very undersea, stuck in a sub feeling colors. :)
I do have a tendency to do more blue than black and white and I thought it worked well with that one
Cheers mate
