Post it like it's Hot

in #blog6 years ago

A couple days ago @eveuncovered tagged me in a post wondering if I have trouble keeping track of my content and ideas like she does. Yes. Yes I do. Eve apologized to her followers for potentially repeating topics but, I don't think that is worth an apology.

As far as repeating content and topics goes, how I see it is that if it adds value to the audience and is relevant for some reason, it is crazy not to talk about it just because it has been talked about before. If it is important to you, it is important enough to post about, if you choose at least. This goes for reposts also but I don't recommend reposting too often, this isn't twitter.

I do repost on occasion but quite rarely and only when for some reason it is relevant. I have literally 2000 odd posts on a whole host of topics so sometimes it makes more sense to use one or modify one of those than write a whole new version. I have also added probably 5000-8000 original images to my posts but find that for some topics, I don't have the depth so end up reusing them. Again, no issue in my opinion.

There are several reasons I think that content and ideas can be reposted but one of the main ones is that if you are an account like @eveuncovered, you are gathering new followers constantly and with the UI being as it is, no one is going to look very far back through the account feed. In the future, some interfaces might solve this issue.

The other reason depends on the type of content also, not everything is repostable due to time and context. Some people use scheduled posting but there is a risk to this if one posts something without realising something else is going on at the same time. It is insensitive to the current environment and has got many a person in trouble on other platforms in the past as they have posted something that hasn't timed well with an unexpected event.

Some content is evergreen, meaning that it is suitable always, like a book would be. A lot of my content falls somewhat into this category as it is not time dependent and, a lot doesn't. Reposting Steem-based articles from 2017 is unlikely to be relevant nor, add much to any ongoing conversation.

Which leads into the next reason, the conversation. If something is engaging and the audience finds it interesting and valuable, why would it be seen as a negative if it is not new? The idea that everything has to be new is part of the consumer cycle, not the measure of content worth. Again, one can pick up a 100 or 1000 year old book that has already been read 3 times and still get value from it.

Some people see it as laziness to use old content but again, it depends on the content genre and topics and what it contains whether it still holds value or not. Reposting the picks for who will win the 2018 World Cup likely doesn't have much value for anyone. Some people just get lazy though and I don't think reposting 'just because' is really the way to go about it. Many seem to do this though.

Like Eve said, she has trouble remembering everything she has posted and whether she has discussed it before, and I am much the same. I have hundreds of unfinished drafts, thousands of images, millions of words. I have posted about 15 novels worth of text in top-level posts without counting my comments, which adds another 3 or 4 books. It is hard to keep track of everything I have covered.

But, does it matter? Does it matter that there is some repetition if people find it entertaining or useful? Does it matter if it improves understanding for some or creates discussion for others? Considering that this is a content driven site, the amount of original content can be quite low and the amount of evergreen material definitely is. For the most part, most posts have a potential lifespan of the 7 day period, if that.

In time, I think that the platforms on Steem will diversify and there will be a growing catalogue of evergreen and useful content that will keep getting dredged up by searches and algorithms time and time again. Perhaps at some point there will be an SMT layer that allows authors to earn residuals on their older content that is seen as valuable.

If there is a chance to earn for months or years on content, perhaps the real writers will put more effort into creating posts that are Built to last, that can be consumed well into the future and still hold relevance. Perhaps at some point, rather than just seeing trending, visitors to the site will get samples of the best of the best on Steem through the years.

Some people think there is no good content here but there is, it just isn't easy to find considering that there is a constant stream of new, low-quality content flooding through. It is part of the problem with having a catchall interface. Other platforms filter out the majority of what is uploaded and push what they consider (through algorithms) valuable to be seen. This is a type of censorship but, it improves the average user experience by showing the viewer more of what they like.

Without that on Steem, the individual user sees what everyone sees which means that all kinds of content comes through the feed. This is why people build their own feed but, that takes time and understanding or it can be just a bad as going to Trending. Again, one day, there will be much better ways to filter and many of the new interfaces are experimenting now.

At the end of the day, everyone is free to post and discuss whatever takes their fancy on any given day and that is a pretty great thing about Steem. What one posts and discusses though is going to have effects on how engaged their audience is and most likely, some effect on the post payout, at least if organically earned.

For me, I write and post what I think has some value at any given time as well as what I think might have value in the future. Yep, sometimes I just write for me too. My goal is though that when someone reads an article, they walk away with something of value to at least think about.

Is there anything in here for you?

So beautiful

Particularly, I do not see any problem in which an idea is repeated, every day is different and the way to approach it also. I go here to read and I like the intention behind what I read, there is optimism and the vision of a daily life with the intention of doing better every time.
In my case, I like to write about reading and writing, without realizing I fall into it when in everyday life something that has to do with that happens to me. I am also convinced that nobody is going to read what I wrote before, if they read it they will do it as new. So I prefer to write about something I like and not fall into a different topic that I may not be able to address.

I do too buuuuuuuuuut, sometimes it is a lot of fun to get a little messy in strange places :D I find it a good way to learn about things to.

That is also true, if we do not know about the subject, we have to investigate and there we learn. It is the best.

I suppose reposting is OK if it is done with discretion and ads value to the platform. The spirit of why the repost plays a part. I find posting therapeutic and intellectually stimulating for myself. Reposting after a year's time can be directed to a new exciting audience. Thanks @tarazkp for the commentary. Blessings.

Yeah, I am not talking of reposting from last week or last month, that is lame. :)

I generally have so much in my head that for me, writing is a chance to get it out so even if I have an old post, will write a new one. I would rather see a good repost that adds value to me than a new shitpost with none.

I love what you do and repetition is good because not all the people have seen your old material.

I wish to have your writing skill and ability in English.

Great things to talk about @tarazkp. I was always worried that I wrote the same things here in steemit because of cheetah and haiku bot. I once told that if I am commented by cheetah for 3 times, my account will be automatically blocked by steemit platform.
Until I realize that cheetah and haiku is detecting me for my own words or post.
Then I wonder, how am I going to be accuse of plagiarism of my own self?

After that, I just kept writting anything that I want to with the hope that my writes could somehow be an inspiration or at least be a guide to newbies so that this platform could habe the chanve of getting more and more quality content.

Long time ago I question myself of the meaning of good quality content but now I believe any content that inspire, motivate or leave something good in someone heart even if it is only 100 words sentence with a single picture also can be considered as quality content.

Thanks for the topic sir.

If it happens, there is a n arbitration process that can get you off their list, in general, I don't recommend cutting and pasting anything, especially comments.

Thank you for the information.

I don't necessarily think there's anything wrong with occasionally reposting some content. People will decide if it's worth voting for. But, you should at least edit it, if it's text based, to try to improve it. If it's images, you should talk about the shoot or the day or whatever.

I don't post only images ever, there is always text. (I remember one time).

I think that it has to change (generally) because from first post to repost, there should be some learning in between so information can be added or removed to refine the post itself and increase its worth for a first time reader and add something new for a second.

I agree.
with the amount of turn over you almost have to repeat some of the material over and over again.
No one looks back at older posts, even the technical items like dustsweeper and steemworld to name a few. Even if you put a tag to it in the post.
Ever post that one makes has new information in it and a personal touch that people have learned since the first time mentioned.

Even if repeating, there is always more that gets added or removed as I have learned (hopefully) along the way. It can be a refinement process .

It is a refining process. The more one makes comments and posts the better in quality it becomes. :) Speaking for myself anyway.

Hi Taraz. I agree as long as it is not repeated too often, but still relevant then why not.

Like this? :D

Yep. In my view there has to be a point to it more than "I don't have any ideas or can't be bothered posting something new." But, that is me. Lately I have been writing about 4000 word+ a day I think without counting comments. Last night was a killer for comments.....
