From my daughter's bedside: dressed for comfort

Instead of staying in today, my daughter and I decided to go shopping together for some comfy warm clothes, the kind of stuff that cam be a bit bigger so she can grow into them. We don't buy a lot of things but she does like some more than others. Her favourite is a dinosaur jumper.

It reminded me of when I was a kid that nearly all of my clothes were hand-me-downs from my three older brothers and that when I started school in the mid-80s, I was dressed in clothes from the early 70s. In the early years, no one cared but that changed later as the culture of 'what you wear' became the norm.

Even though I care very little for brands now, in my early teens I fell quite heavily into thinking about these things and as I have worked since the age of 12 in some way, I shudder to think how much money went down the drain.

I remember feeling at the time out of place if I felt that what I was wearing was not what would have been considered a 'good brand' by my peers. Even though I didn't care for their opinions much, I felt that it was my decision to want these things and felt more confident wearing them. Ridiculous.

But, what we wear does have an effect on us and our behaviour. I have never met someone who doesn't change their posture and demeanour when they go from casual to suit. I have never known a woman to wear anything other than her better underwear to a wedding, even if no one will see the difference. Whether social conformity or not, our clothes do change our mood, at least for some period of time.

Although many make claims, I have never met someone who truly does not care about what they wear or what others think of them. Sure, they might not care what everyone thinks but they do care what some people think. When it comes to relationships, I feel this is a good thing.

I like when my wife dresses up for when we go out, I like that she takes the additional time to make an effort to look her best. I also like when we are at home and she is wearing well-worn, oversized comfy clothes and no makeup.

Although I definitely think consumerism has gone too far, I am also glad that not everything worn is for practicality and comfort either. I find it interesting when people judge others on their clothes and especially women who judge other women for wearing things like high heels. Wear what you are comfortable in doesn't just mean the physical aspects of the clothing and what fits one, doesn't necessarily work on another.

Ask a kid I was no allowed to wear trendy or fashionable things until late in high school. I did get a few blue jeans with those fancy pockets. LOL Graduated in 1980. Today I have many dress clothes and tuxes. But I love going to three day estate sales and moving sales and buy quality on the cheap. At this point in my life I really don't care what folks think of me. They do not pay my bills. LOL Thanks @tarazkp.

It is funny how we all generally have some kind of clothing history/memory we carry with us. It must also depend on when and where we grew up though.

I only buy clothes that fit well and are comfortable. I bought some trousers last year and now wish i had bought more. I can't always find clothes that fit me perfectly and I should have taken advantage of the opportunity. The only problem was they were expensive because they had a brand name attached to them. I don't normally buy brands but these don't feel like you are wearing a sack. Steem needs to do well as I have high standards now.

Lol. I have trouble finding clothes that fit too, especially dress shirts. Some time ago I found a brand that fit me well while shopping abroad in an outlet but unfortunately, it was D&G and I can't afford 200€+ for a dress shirt :D

Mine were Pierre Cardin pants at 120 pounds a pop.I bought 3 pairs and will be going back. I have never bought a pair before that I have never had to alter and these are a perfect fit. I guess we will be going shopping in the future at some point.

Pants are generally too long for me but I can live with that :)

I like to wear clothing that is comfortable as I spend too much time dressed up for meetings and the sorts but remember a time I went into a luxury watch store and no salesman would attend me thinking I couldn’t afford a watch from the store. Once I was finally approached, they quickly disregarded my questions regarding a known luxury brand and showed me “cheaper” options. This bothered me so much that I said, “I will take that one,” without knowing the price. It is to this day my largest purchase I have ever made but also my most fulfilling...

I understand that type of situation all too well but, I would have walked out without them ever knowing the loss. I don't have a lot of time for that kind of behavior. But, I definitely know the situation and I can imagine the satisfaction felt.

"Our clothes do change our mood". How true! I have 2 sets of clothes: 1 for work and one for comfort. I feel that this is the same for most people, especially in the professional world. When I go to work, it is expected to look professional. I still have my heels but more often than not, I find myself selecting the lower heels lately. Guess I am getting old. As soon as I get hone, into the comfy clothes!

I wish I could wear heels... just for the added height, and I think it would make my calves look better ;)

I don't need a suit for work but I do wear collared shirts and sometimes ties even though I am often working in factory environments (with management teams) as it helps provide some separation which is often necessary for a consultant. My relationships with my clients however is very close.

At the time I see the picture of your beautiful daughter, my two daughters are with me and they also saw her, the first thing they said in Spanish and in the tone of affection as women talk when they see a baby,

aaaaayyy that Heeeeermosa Bebe,

What a beautiful baby, I finished the sentence with, God bless and fill her with great health.

It brought me good memories your comment where you say you work since age 12. I come from a very poor family in this case mother with two children without parents, then I was given up for adoption. And that family taught me to work from 10 years in a vegetable market. It really brought back fond memories of my childhood when I worked.
