A housekeeping security reminder

in #security5 years ago

With the wallet split taking place on Steemit.com, I used it as a spark of inspiration to change my passwords across various accounts that should have heightened security: Steem, exchanges etc. I haven't been very careful with my passwords in the past but I think that it is time to change that behavior, so I decided to create new and, secure them with LastPass.

I don't know if that is a good idea yet.

As I said the other day in a post about security, crypto is going to have to find ways to make it a fair bit easier for people to use the services if it is going to become mainstream. While I am all for responsibility of ownership, I also don't want to hear all the drama and complaints of people losing their keys or having their crypto stolen. Yes, it does happen accidentally but on steem, if you have been using your Masterkey for logging on, there is a certain amount of just a matter of time before it happens.

I am glad that Steemit Inc has split the wallet away (would be nice with some back keys) though and I really hope that they are going to do as they have said and develop the interface of steemit.com faster. Without needing to worry about token security, they should be able to get some trial and error integrations in to test with the community and polish them later.

What I have been surprised by is how many people didn't know that the split of wallet and condenser was happening and some of them based on their activity and history REALLY SHOULD have known as it has been in the pipeline and announced for several months already. This is something that happens a lot though as there are people who like to talk about all they know but, don't actually know when major things take place. It happened with Resource credits also. Stay up to date, follow @steemitblog at the very least and most of all, don't create drama where there isn't any.

But, that is the way updates go on Steem and in life in general. For every change that some people like, there are a group of others that don't care for it at all. Winners and losers, no matter the outcome.

Of course, it is getting harder ad harder to stay up to date with all the things that are happening on Steem and then on top of that, you might have noticed that there has been a slight move in the markets also, With BTC up about 20% in 48 hours. Steem the lagger coin will follow soon enough.

This is the other reason to get into good password hygiene habits because the higher the prices, the more shortcuts to wealth people are going to try and take and when there are millions of users that are going to be pouring in, the sharks are going to be looking for easy targets. Are you an easy target?

At the end of 2017, early 2018 a lot of new users came onto Steem and, a lot of them lost their keys in their first days. I hope that doesn't happen this time but, there are lots of dead accounts out there created by people who heard about free money but didn't read the instructions on the box very well. We have grown accustomed to having centralized authorities look after our security for so long people forget that that isn't secure.

Let's see if LastPass is worth the 3 dollars a month for Premium - I have my reservations so I will approach it with caution. So, resetting passwords and cleaning up my record keeping is what I have spent the last four hours of my life doing and hopefully, it will help me stay a little safer in the future.

Responsibility is key, your key is your responsibility.

I was quite astonished at the number of people that didn't know it was to happen. Why, it was almost like they just posted and ran and didn't bother their chuff with the actual site...

But, but I wasn't sent a formal invitation to the party addressed to me by registered mail.

My cat told me nothing and that is how I learn things!!!!

F this I'm powering down and staking it all in BEOS!

Stake it!!! It only costs 500 BTS!!! Which did give me pause... :0D

I wonder if I have any BTS 🤔

Oh you must have!! Surely? I bought some back in the day because it was as cheap as chips.

I knew knew less than Jon Snow back in the day :D

Did you stake any, Snow?

Did you eat steak?!

The only way is steak!! I never bothered with the beos though. When I got to the bit about downloading another wallet I was like nyaeg

Fair enough. It was testing my effort levels, but after I got it set up I decided to throw a few more in. Currently being sprinkled in BEOS :D

I totally agree with this and read about the change happening, just didn't know when. I was a sweaty bunny a few months ago updating my passwords and it should be easier next time around. Please let me know how last pass works out as I want something decent. If we are all going to be rich then we may as well secure our things properly.

it is a little nerve-racking changing the passwords isn't it :D
Yeah, will let you know but for 3 dollars a month it is not a large sum to test it out.

I remember when one of my accounts with a popular website got exposed and they told me to reset my passwords and I realized that I was using the same passwords for various logins. It took me days to change them to mitigate the risks! A password keeper is a great idea! I also heard that the Trezor hardware wallet has a password manager as well.

I have a Ledger Nano but it is not very handy... :D

Now we can have third party ads!!!

😟😦😞

Yep, but only on steemit.com so far. no one is forced to use it.

It will be a waterfall ... Too easy of a method to make cash with effectively no effort.

I have mine written securely on my whiteboard on my office wall so no problems here. 😬😂

I've used a password manager since day one. It would've been completely impossible to manage them all without an app like that.

I have managed without up until yesterday but, it isn't easy :D

Oh crap! now you've just spread new traces & fresh aromas to sniff around your new created passwords. I'll have to send my best hounds to your account right now to pinpoint & repair all the holes that you've left scattered all over the place to save your little arse. };)

lol, yeah, there is not for anyone to find... anything important I Kaiser Soze'd it.

¡Beware! is what Kobayashi would tell!

Yeah I did not know about the change and so it took me off guard with the wallet. In fear of being scammed I got worried but it is legit. It definitely does not seem as user-friendly but I suppose it's not about me. How necessary is it do you believe to change all the passwords or should we be fine for a while. Thanks my friend @tarazkp

It is worth following steemitblog to keep up to date with stuff.

Not necessary to change but I do from time to time.

Of course, it is getting harder ad harder to stay up to date with all the things that are happening on Steem ...

People are welcome to read the SoS Daily News as a fast-track way to keep up to date with all things that are happening on Steem 😃

Yep indeed. They just don't because they can't earn from reading ;D lots of stuff going on which is great to see.

Maybe I should give out tokens for reading it!

I could call them INFORMED

You need to spell it funnily.. maybe
