”Fuck”, the “priest” said. *”Fuck, fuck, fuck!”

”Now, now, priest”, Xeraias said. ”Cursing isn’t exactly holy behavior, is it?”

Behind the door, where she kept herself hidden, Mia was rolling her eyes. This damn hybrid always thought he was the funniest person in the room. Then again, that pretend priest wasn’t funnier, so maybe he was right for once.

”Why did you abduct me? I haven’t done or even just intended you any harm. I’m a man of God”, the man said.

Yeah, right, Mia thought.

”Oh, are you now?” Xeraias said. ”That would surprise me. I’m pretty sure there are no faithful humans around anymore since the whole concept of God has been proven to be silly. We know where we come from and why we are here. You humans know it, we hybrids know it, the aliens know it. There is a purpose, and it isn’t dictated by a God that keeps invisible, it’s dictated by an intelligence that happily shows itself to intelligent species when they have evolved enough. The Christian God is a myth, and you know it. So tell me, preacher, what are you? Why are you here?”

That was the moment for which Mia had waited. With her mind, she forcefully reached out to the man’s thoughts, pushed through the lies that were forming, and reached for the truth, which immediately started spilling out of him. @suesa
”I’m a member of the society of the enlightened. We’ve been around since the year 1276, and are since looking for the chosen one to fulfill the prophecy we have been handed by our founder. The chosen one will, once and for all, end all of humanity’s suffering and bring a new age of enlightenment and peace.”

Mia grinned. Good news, it seemed. It had been a while since one of the enlightened had crossed her path, and most of them had been hard to manipulate. But this guy… he was soft. Easy to steer. She decided to keep him.

The conversation between Xeraias and the man had continued, but Mia knew what she needed to know, and decided to go home. Quickly, she pushed Xeraias slightly so he’d bring the man home, instead of killing him, and slipped away.
It wasn’t long after she arrived home, when she heard the front door open.

”Mia? I’m home!” She heard Xeraias call out. She left her room to greet him, and the guest, putting on what she called her housewife face.

”Xeraias! You’re home, finally. I was worried when you didn’t return last night. Did you have to work longer? And who’s your friend?” She smiled, and noticed how the fake priest’s heart started to beat faster. He liked her. A little bit too much. That could be useful.

Pregnancy was exhausting. With each passing day, the weight of the baby grew more, and it started to impact Mia’s abilities negatively, which she didn’t like one bit. It was important that she kept full control over the situation, at all times, especially with Joel here. But reading his mind became harder and harder.

Just now, she had been forced to have a conversation with him about her relationship to Xeraias. He had focused so much on the fact that she was pregnant by the hybrid that it made her uncomfortable, especially because Joel was right. She was disgusted by Xeraias, and she had hated each time she had shared the bed with this abomination. But it had been necessary to conceive her child. The child that so many generations of her family had prepared for, and both of her sisters had tried to conceive. She had been the only one successfully impregnated, so it was her responsibility to carry this child to term and raise it.

Didn’t change the fact that Xeraias’ presence was repelling.

It was time. For weeks now, Mia had sensed that Xeraias was planning something, something drastic, which finally encouraged her to try and read his mind. She hated doing that, the minds of aliens and hybrids were … icky. She couldn’t describe it. Humans felt okay, but everything with alien genes just gave her a headache when she dove too deeply.

Her sacrifice had been rewarded, Xeraias’ plans revealed to her. One last meeting with the drug dealers he had promised her to never see again. She had known he had been meeting with them, even though he had tried to hide it. But now, he was seriously trying to cut all ties. And this served as a perfect opportunity to get rid of him, once and for all.

The moment Xeraias left the apartment, Mia snuck into Joel’s room, where the man was already asleep. Carefully, she reached out for his dreams, caught his subconscious and bent it to her will. Joel stood up, eyes open, but unseeing. Mia handed him a gun, which he took without hesitation.

”Go now”, Mia whispered. Her consciousness followed him on his way to kill Xeraias, so she could confirm his death. The hybrid would not come home, and Joel would be none the wiser.

Xeraias was dead, out of the way, and her child was about to be born any moment, the contractions were already very close to another. If her abilities hadn’t almost completely faded, Mia would have been happy. But the fact that she wasn’t even able to push Joel to do anything anymore worried her. Was it being pregnant that had this effect on her? Would it go away once she had given birth? She hoped so, she’d need it to protect her child.

Another contraction made her scream.

”Okay, now push!” The midwife instructed.

What do you think I am fucking DOING, BITCH, Mia thought, but didn’t say. Language like this wouldn’t fit the image she had tried to build of herself, so she bit her lip and pushed more instead.

”Almost there, almost there!” The midwife called out. ”There we go! A healthy … what the hell?!”

Joel stormed in and took the child away from the midwife who had turned as white as a sheet. Mia felt a sting in her heart. Of course, her child would also carry some alien traits. Forever disfigured …

”Is my baby okay?” She asked Joel.

”I think so”, he replied. ”It’s a girl.”

”A girl …” Mia smiled. A girl was perfect. Then she remembered that she had to play the loving widow. ”Do you hear that, Xeraias? We have a little daughter. We got our Lily.” She turned to Joel and stretched out her arms. ”Can I hold her?”

Joel hesitated. Then he pressed her child, her little girl, her Lily, against his chest, turned, and ran away.

”JOEL?! Mia screamed, tried to reach out for him, tried to make him stop with the force of her will, but she was too exhausted. She couldn’t reach him.

Her baby was gone.

Everything she had gone through

For nothing.

I really did not expect that! Well played...

Glad that after all these stories, I'm still able to surprise people :P

Good twists deserve recognition 😇 so I boosted it a bit.

I am curious what @apsu thinks 😂

Well I'm still surprised, especially as I thought she loved X.

Technically, you were right with both guesses, I give you that xD

And you should know better by now, there is no true love in my stories. Not really.

I still believe love is somewhere, out there.

That's why kindness is repaid with betrayal and genocide. :(
