Shedding Some Light On Photo Editing - Put The Filters Down!

in #confidence5 years ago (edited)

Fewer things irk me more than people trying to make themselves look "better" with photo filters, blurring, bright/soft light to hide flaws.

...As if we're too dumb to notice.

...People are supposed to be able to see your cheeks and nose.

...Skin should have some lines in it.

There's a big difference between fine tuning colors/lighting/tone for the sake of art or photography, and trying to hide features to deceive an audience.

Call me old-fashioned or a massive jerk, but this crutch fuels an unachievable standard for insecure/impressionable people, who often don't realize it's a manufactured appearance.

That's not rocket science, Matt... You're right, but why do so many people do it? No freakin' clue...

Be yourself. Own who you are.

We all age. That's life.

Confidence comes from within, not who you superficially adjust yourself to be.

In my view, presenting yourself naturally/realistically/honestly will always be far more attractive than the alternative.

Most people aren't out there to find every flaw you have. They're there to see and appreciate the real you.

I don't adjust my face or photoshop myself whatsoever and never will. I'm not better than anyone, but I have no interest in deceiving people. I am who I am. The only thing I'll cover up is my team's name for privacy.

But let's say I did for once to show how ridiculous it looks...

This is a celebratory post home run high-five from back in 2016. It was a majestic blast over the tall left field wall into a dog park. Yes, I put the year because I also don't present old pics as being current.

Just a quick fix or two to soften those bags under my eyes. Tone down the laugh lines just a tad, ahhh, perfect!

NEVER

What happens when bad pictures pitchers make me angry.

I didn't make this, but it's probably the only "filtered" photo I had. I think it covers just about all of the bases of what not to do.

Be yourself for God's sake.

God you're pretty in that edited shot :D I need to have your filter app thingy!

Awww, thanks!! I thought I looked better in this other one, but will trust your judgment.

Well, I felt that one had more to do with your Chanel or was it Fenty Foundation, still is pretty, but slightly caked I must say. There's an uncake filter in Photoshop though, you might want to try that out next time.

Haha! Come on! You know I don't speak Dutch.

I had to Google these too :-/

There's been a few complaints about school photos being manipulated over here and even photos with Santa in some places (sometimes it's the same photography company) They take the liberty to touch up pictures and remove moles and fix mono brows etc.

People were getting the photos back and seeing little Johhny has been changed without any prior consent and there was a bit of discontent for a while. Rather than stop doing it they added a disclaimer saying that's what the policy is.

Everything has to be perfect for some people even if it's fake.

I've heard of this before but forgot about it. What a travesty. This is what happens when dumb, vain and impressionable people enter the workforce. How they wouldn't understand that this could cause countless body image issues for children is disgusting...

It wouldn't be so bad if they took the time to ask the parents if they wanted them touched up and said what they were planning to alter. Some of my school photo's were pretty embarrassing, I wouldn't have minded if they fixed some of them. One year I rode my bike to school when my hair was still wet from the shower and when I got to school I looked like I'd just stuck my finger in a power point and switched it on, when it dried out it stayed like that all day.

I still remember getting the pics back and everyone in the class laughing at me. When I got home with the pics Mum thought I'd deliberately sabotaged the pics so I'd never have to do it again, she was seriously pissed off. She drove me to school every year after that on photo day.

People want to look like they're balling or prettier. I like certain filters though, I have encountered lots of ordinary photos that have emotional appeal because of the filter.

Art and photography purposes such as what I think you're referencing are great. No qualms. I'm talking about when people try to hide flaws or deceive people into thinking they're better-looking or younger than they really are.

Majestic blast even if it was 2016 get a 100% upvote.

Ahh I got caught, in a good way!! Thank you!
