What Would A World Without Beauty Standards Look Like?

in #life7 years ago

We currently live in a world with exceedingly high standards of beauty. Let´s have a look on social media. I want to talk about Tumblr. Instagram Pinterest Youtube and all these new platforms where young teens 13+ have access to.

All these media´s made a lot of space for creativity and social activism. It could possibly be viewed as a release from social pressures. For everyone who struggled with expressing themselves and fitting in. I am glad to be born at this century because we now have so many possibilities and chances to live the life how we want it to be. If all the technology is good or bad is another topic which we can discuss in another post later on…

I remember the time where we had our first computer with internet access. I was 9/10 or somewhere around that age. Until then I didn´t care about beauty standards. I grew up in a little village around cows and sheep and enjoyed being a kid. Also some friends at school asked me if I knew specific songs or „Youtube-Stars“ but I didn´t. I am so thankful for that time because I still remember how it felt like to concentrate of your inner self and how to shine from the inside out which is the prettiest thing a human can wear in my opinion.

But things have changed. Nowadays girls and also boys starting at the age of 8 already, watching hours of tutorials on blogs or videos on how to perfect nails, hair, make-up and of course clothing! A few years ago I deleted all my social media accounts on every platform. Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr. etc etc…  The reason why I did this is simple. I got bullied in school and if you wanna know a little bit more about this - I wrote in another blogpost about it.  But since I needed social media back in my life for business reasons and since I am capable to stand against this hate pressure, I registered at some platforms and started new. I still wanted to keep my feed clean and did not want to be manipulate by the beauty standards these days. So what I did was to follow accounts which I am interested in and ignore the most popular accounts like Kim Kardashian, Kyle Jenner etc. etc. …

But that didn't help. My feed is full of beauty videos, non sense comedy and all that „popular stuff“.

I realized that beauty standards are more important than ever to our teens. Women feel shamed if they do not fit a specific westernized body is a real problem with consequences. Have you seen the problem ?

In Estelle Freedman´s „No Turning Back“, she writes,

"In the contemporary United States, over half of thirteen-year-old girls and three-quarters of eighteen-year-old girls express dissatisfaction with their body. A 1986 study found that 70 percent of fourth-grade girls reported concern about their weight and that about half of them dieted.”

I was kind of shocked reading this. When I was in fourth-grade I asked my mom or dad to drive me to a fast-food restaurant so I could eat anything that I dreamed of while I sat for hours and hours on a school bench.

Also photo editing of celebrities has gone too far! They are exposing themselves to a specific, young demographic along with the pointed goal of the porn industry to adhere to men. The message they send is clear - Women who aren´t white but well tanned, skinny but also curvy and do not have long healthy strait hair or/and a flawless skin will never be accepted.  Please think about all the young girls being unhappy because of their look. Isn´t everyone pretty as long as they feel pretty in the inside ?

Just imagine how a world without any beauty standards would look like

What do you think? I dont talk about neglect the hygiene, I talk about beauty standards! No fake lashes, no fake tan, no fake nails, no hair extensions , no plastic surgery … Think about a world where humans didn´t care about how they look and how they dress. Would we have less problems to fit in ? I mean, I also wear fake nails and make-up sometimes but I also feel extremely comfortable with fresh naked skin. ( With naked I mean no make-up lol )

I really hope that some day we can live in a world where young girls do not refuse food at the age of thirteen or punish their bodies when they give in to cookies and co., all for the sake of looking „pretty“…

I would like to read about your opinion in the comments so feel free to comment below.

Thanks for reading

Important question. I go with Alicia Keys here: no make-up at all.
Nature is the most beautiful thing Earth has to offer...😉

Halleluja to Alicia Keys !!!

One of a million reasons why I think that the ideal childhood has to occur outside of modern society. I'm glad to have found a nice quiet spot out here in the rainforest because I can't imagine subjecting my future kids to the psychological manipulation and abuse that is all too common for most kids today.

Perfect comment! Thanks for that!
I am also glad that I grew up around a farm without any social media influences ... I also want my kids to get to know both sides but experience most of the time the nature, toys and a lot of books instead of iPads and smartphones

Excellent statement. I'd do exactly the same.

Hats off @Soldier for discussing this vital but mostly ignored topic. Almost all social media celebrities want to rather cash in this trend of perfectbody, ideal body etc, etc. But you really did the opposite. I hope people (especially teen girls) understand how important it is too stay away from this trend.

You´re absolutely right! I hope that some time the world is going to change so especially teen girls can focus on the inside. We will lost our bodies sooner or later, but what will happen with our soul ? @sirwinchester once told me - The body gets older and some time we wont look pretty anymore, its the inside that counts!

Absolutely right.

@soldier This couldn't have been said better. A very well written post indeed. These days, everyone is so obsessed with proving to the world that they meet the global beauty standards using the photo modifying filters and beautycams, that they totally forget to live the moment and accept themselves.
This post is a reminder for everyone to love who they really are...

And this is the problem. Women these days hate theirselves because of these beauty standards. Everyone has flaws but we need to accept them and start to train ourselves instead of being a copy cat!

I think this problem is much deeper than a beauty standard, it stems from such a blind adherence to the cultural standards. If people in the west value their "individualism" so much, why do they all look to the same media to understand the world. Hollywood and news channels and printed media and the record industry have their agendas. They want to make money and that will always be their priority. They might eventually offer more fat models as a way to get fat consumers to connect more, but it's about bringing in those potential consumers.

It's up to people to just stop caring about all that stuff that caters to the darker side of human nature and fear.

And this is the point ! Of course the industry won't stop ! It is all about money and making business and as you said , it's up to the people how they react to it !

there is a really effective and simple solution to quite a bit of this, turn the television off, and i dont mean for a while i mean forever, stop allowing someone else to fill your childrens heads with this crap its everywhere, every add , every news story, every news caster, movie star, tv star on and on just grab the cord yank it out of the wall and cut the end off , saves tons of money, saves millions of psyches and it cheap and simple, we need to stop letting our children "grow up" and return to "raising " them.

or let them grow up in nature, with people, with trees, and without all the images of a self-destructive society.

Beautiful post and a powerful message! This topic needs to be addressed more. And I love the front image! True beauty inside & out <3

Awe thank you so much my love ! We already discussed this topic and I am glad that we have the same mindset! As steemit grows that's how our voice grows too so we need to reach many more people with important messages like this !

Nice photo @soldier

Follow you ;)

Real Beauty in a soul...

Thank you so much! Appreciate

Have a nice day @soldier!

All girls are realy naturar Beauty!!!

You're right. It's so funny when you imagine like 90% of women uses make-up but men haven't got anything to hide for so do. we have more beautiful men on earth than women ? :P

Beauty inside and not outside and it does not matter whether you are a woman or a man ... Culture suggests a woman to decorate herself more ... A man should pay attention to other things. This is our beauty

Wonder full post. I think we must start teaching children at younger ages what it really means to be masculine and feminine or whatever you identify with. How to have healthy expressions of these ideas. If we don't start teaching our little developing members of society soon, corporate interests will. - keep up the thought provoking material.

great comment! Thank you so much for your thoughts!
