Massive Steam Train Rebuild

in #photography8 years ago (edited)

I just so happened to stop in Ely Nevada and found a train museum. This place has working steam trains and a fictional train repair facility with original tooling. The "Machine Shop" is open for viewing with a fee. The workers here are voluntary and do this to preserve the knowledge and the machine shop.

I was lucky enough to see an antique steam engine going through a full rebuild. they must be rebuilt every 15 years to keep them in operation.

This is the smaller room in the massive facility. The room next door holds many antique steam and diesel train engines.

Every rivet on the boiler is numbered and inspected. The entire cabin where the engineer and conductor would work is gone during the rebuild.

Here is the pit where repairs can take place under the engine.

This is a view of the two stage cylinders with the heads and pistons removed. Looks like they have a lot of cleaning to do.

That sounds like a interesting place to see. I love trains, but I have never heard of this museum. I need to tell my son about this he is with the Burlington Northern R-R 👍
Resteemed socky!

You must check it out. They have two steam trains that they take passengers. If you pay more and book well in advance, you can shovel coal in the engine during the trip.

I will do that socky, If you tell my wife that she could shovel coal it might be a done deal. We had friends that were machinist and members of the live steam model R/R club in Cincinnati and they would build there own engines, and she would love this!!

This is a train make company. Oh nice post.

Good post, good pictures of trains, I would like to visit the place, Thanks for sharing.

These are really made with heavy metals, heavy even to withstand the trigger of bullets!

You really had a good tour...knowledge of stuffs like these are recycled for a better and faster ones.
