Butterfly Day - More Monarchs with Some FriendssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #butterflyday5 years ago (edited)

Here is this week's #butterflyday (and insects) post sponsored by @whatisnew before I show you the monarch larvae we'll start out with some other critters I found.

Here's a red spotted purple butterfly I found while mushroom hunting. The latin name is limenitis arthemis this one didn't quite have the red spots some others have, it may have just emerged.

I also found this shiny stag beetle a few feet away from the butterfly above. The latin name is Pseudolucanus capreolus. Here's video of it crawling on my arm https://d.tube/v/sketch.and.jam/Qmco1VhecTUZ7FP1eFZHXWoPFb76TVVpkdun8sJx7kzAcj

I found this toothbrush looking character on my way to work in the morning. I think this is a type of tussock moth most likely a Definite-marked Tussock Moth - Orgyia definita.

Spider season is starting in Chicago already as we approach fall. Tons of these orb weavers fill in the gaps around all the buildings downtown.

Now for the monarchs. Here's a plump caterpillar munching on the milkweed.

More caterpillars we have small, medium and large. The small guy is just right of the big one.

Here's a caterpillar starting to form a pupa.

Sometimes the hanging process goes awry these two may have been in a bad spot and dried out in the sun while hanging.

Here's a couple fresh crysalis.

As they get closer to emerging from the crysalis it starts changing color from light green to goldish brown.

The orange and black from the monarch's wings begin to show through as it ages.

This one is almost ready to hatch, the crysalis is fully transparent.

I hope I can get pictures of the emerging process but it seems while I'm at work they emerge and on my way back I find an empty shell.

Here's an empty crysalis.

Finally a shot of a full grown monarch. Happy #butterflyday

Love all of your photos! I've been lucky enough to photograph a red spotted purple butterfly in a garden in Dallas, Texas a few years ago.

They are really striking, one day i hope to find one of their crysalis.

WOW!!! I couldn't wait to see what you found for this week and you sure did not disappoint!!! Your find and photos are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! How fortunate that you were able to see all of these things with your own eyes. But I think you are crazy for letting that stag beetle crawl up your arm. That gave me the heebie-jeebies and so did that orb weaver. Shivers! Thanks so much for sharing all of these beauties with me and all of Steemit. What a treat. And as always, thanks for using #butterflyday tag @sketch.and.jam! : )

I found a few butterflies today that had just emerged but none mid process. I'll have to take the water taxi in the morning for more orb weaver shots. Those boats are covered in them, some are really big. Fortunately orbs don't bite unless you are really squeezing them.

Lucky you for finding more freshest of the fresh butterflies but you can keep your orb weavers. LOL! I don't think I could take the water taxi knowing that they are covered with orbs. I know how big and round they can get because I have the pics to prove it. I have pics of a 2 orbs with a very small abdomens and it was mating. I will post it soon. I am always proud of my self when I get pics of spiders because I am petrified of them.

Only spiders that scare me are brown recluse and black widows.

Oh yes...they are the worst ones and if I saw them I would definitely not get pics of them.

Very alive ....perfect click .

Wonderful collection. I see for the first time the butterfly in the first picture - and it looks spectacular.

I wish i could find the crysalis of the top butterfly.

Some great shots, @sketch.and.jam. You documented the Monarchs beautifully.

I'm still hoping for an emerging shot, fortunately there's plenty of crysalis hanging around.

That's great news. I haven't seen one in years or many Monarchs for that matter. The Eastern population hasn't been doing as well as the western one.

I had friends tell me they were seeing many Monarchs on Manitoulin Island.

Wow.....!!!!🤗
All fantastic beautiful photos !!!!!!!!!!
@sketch.and.jam
I finally found a couple of Monarch caterpillars on some milkweed. I've been hoping to see some crysalis. The photos you took are amazing.
I hope you can get pictures of the emerging process too. I would love to see the pictures.
:D

Just this morning i got one that had just emerged next to its empty crysalis drying out its wings. Hopefully i can get one that is in the middle of emerging.
