Mark Twain Was Right About The Cherimoya...

in #share2steem6 years ago (edited)

I wanted to try a Cherimoya (Custard Apple) for years, but they are very hard to come by here in Belgium.

To my big surprise, my girlfriend found one in the supermarket today. 💜 I was over the moon. 🤩

Finally I had the chance to find out if the raving reviews were true...

And believe me, they are. It is the tastiest fruit I ever had. 😋

Mark Twain was absolutely right when he called the cherimoya "the most delicious fruit known to men". 👌💜🍈

I missed my Cherimoya tree from my childhood. You should try the Soursop too!

Haven't tried that yet. Both are so hard to find here in Belgium. Our climate is too cold for the plants to survive here (still, I have a 1 year old cherimoya tree in a container inside the house, hoping it will ever grow fruit, lol).

The only one of the Annonceae family that would be able to survive here, would be the Pawpaw, but I haven't seen it being sold anywhere either.
This cherimoya was a lucky shot. I've read that it's not easy to ship them around the world, and after 3 yearrs of trying to find one, they are suddenly selling them in our local supermarket.
Who knows I get even more lucky and find a soursop or squamosa somewhere.
Last year they were selling all kinds of tropical fruits during the Christmas period, like dragonfruit, kiwano, nashi pears, persimmon and so on...

But I can't imagine anything being more delicious than the cherimoye I had today :0)

You should travel to Thailand one day hehe, there are many interesting exotic fruits.

If you have the opportunity, you could drive to Paris and go to the 13th arrondissement, they might sell soursop and custard apples.

Paris is actually not so very far from here, a littlle over 300 km, so I might just do that.

Thailand... I don't know... I have a lot of friends going there regularly, and I want to go too some day, but for some reason I'm more attracted to South-America than to Asia

You should be able to find soursop in South America too. They will probably also have exclusive types fruits that are worth trying. One to try is the Badea (Passiflora quadrangularis), I used to eat some when a kid in New Caledonia. I will need to remember to find some when I get back there for Christmas.

Oh I love Chirimoya so much! I remember eating them in India and have also chased them since! They had lots of orchards in Spain, but it wasn't season yet when we were there last time! Just looking up at all these unripe fruits in the trees...!
Great you found one in Belgium, but I am sure, if you go to where they go and get them fresh from the trees, they will be even better! :D

Oh by the way, while I "have" you - I thought to soon make a Garden Journal for November as I am leaving this amazing garden within 2 weeks or so, but I guess the post will be up by then anyway. I might not leave until the very end of the month.. But I am very close to getting my own garden in Denmark..!!

I'm happy to hear you'll get your own garden i n Denmzrk soon. I'll try go get the contest post up today or Tuesday, so you can still join. (Kind of a busy week, but I'll try my best)

Ah, don't worry, I'm not that much in a hurry! :) As I said I might even stay till the very end of the month <3 Well we a´have made a bid on an amazing piece of land in the forest, but we don't know yet if we will win it or not, but I really hope so!!

wow really? I've never heard of it, what does it resemble? I wonder if they have them over here? It doesn't look familiar though! If they're that rare you should grow them in your greenhouse and sell them.

Unfortunately, it's too cold in the greenhouse during winter. It's a tree that grows to be 9 meters high, but you can keep it smaller if you geow it in a container.
The fruit is also called 'custard apple', because the texture is really like custard. The flavor?
On Wikipedia you can find that the taste is discribed 'as a blend of banana, pineapple, papaya, peach, and strawberry', but we thought more about pear and vanilla.

It originates from the highlands og Chili, Peru and other South-American countries. The most northern countries you can grow them are Spain and Italy, so it shouldn't be possible here in Belgium. The seed I planted last year, though, has done prett good. I moved it indoors now, but I can't keep doing that if it grows higher than 3 meters...

howdy today simplymike! oh that is so interesting..well it might be worth it to have that tree take up most of your living room! lol. No but that is interesting, I'm wondering if it would grow in Texas!

Isn't Texas terribly hot? If I remember correctly the plant can't take too high temperatures either (spoiled brats). They grow in the highlands, at 1000 to 2000 meters high. I assume it won't get really hot there

oh rats..yeah it's way too hot for it then, I bet those things are darn expensive aren't they? Thanks for the explanation simplymike!

Custard apples grow in Caribbean. I read the comment about Soursup. I prefer soursup over cherimoya. They sell nectar in the supermarket - guanabana, try it to get an idea about the taste. Also there is another fruit I love - jackfruit. I think jackfruit is on the top of my list, it tastes like sweet roses. Mother Nature is amazing.
