at the grocery store I was presented with a tough choice...I was reduced to having to rely on the little grey cells.
one gallon of store brand 1% milk for $2.79 or two half-gallons of store brand 1% milk for $1.25 each.
Is innumeracy so widespread that the grocery store is able to sell milk by the gallon? Shelf space in stores is at a premium and grocery stores have amazingly fast sales cycles, typically having only a 2-3 day supply on hand for 90%+ of their inventory. Sure, some specialty items with high markups might sit on shelves for some extended period of time but produce, dairy, bread, meats, and other basics are restocked very frequently.
I’ve seen cashiers baffled by returning any amount of money that doesn’t appear displayed in flashing numbers before them. Buy something that costs $13.25 and take a twenty out of your wallet. The cashier will have $6.75 flashing in front of them.
