The Hamilton Island in Australia.

in #photography6 years ago

One of the amazing things about the internet I realised is how information no longer needs to be stored locally on your own computer or mobile device. There is some degree of comfort knowing that pictures you take can sit online in the cloud and maintained by people who know much better how to secure and store your files for the long term. Understandably, there are warranted concerns over privacy and leakage events, but the benefits usually outweigh the negatives.

I stumbled across some pictures of mine from my trip to Hamilton Island earlier last year and this was thanks to my phone uploading pictures automatically to my baidu cloud storage service. Without this, I would have lost all my pictures forever because the phone I took them with was stolen during my stay.

It also comforts me a little to learn a bit more about the platform and how at least the text of the posts will be secured by people all over the world and resistant to tampering or editing. As a casual user, I never really thought about the implications of such a system and how much it could change a society very much imbued with sharing daily photos and tid bits of life. For that, I must comment the platform founders for pushing the technology just a little bit further and I fully expect this to be one of the leading reasons why blockchain social is going to thrive in the near future.

Hamilton Island is actually the largest inhabited island of the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland Australia. Just north of Brisbane, it is the only island in the Great Barrier Reef with it's own commercial airport which allows it to network and connect with Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns.

Like most other islands in the Whitsunday Island group, the Hamilton Island was actually formed as a result of rising sea levels.

Believe it or not, the island is one of the most desirable island escapes, having won this title once in 2015 by the "Australian Traveller" journal.

Below you can see a picture of the Hamilton Island marina. It hosts the "Hamilton Island Race Week" yachting festival each year which hosts hundreds of yachts from Australia and New Zealand, most of them to participate in the various racing events.

Serene, idyllic are two common superlatives ascribed to Hamilton Island and because of that, it has a very considerable tourism industry which makes up the main industry of the island.

Since this boom of tourist traffic, there is now a growing number of residents, the last time the census was recorded, there was just over 1200 permanent inhabitants on the island, but that figure is most likely very out of date. Many people have chosen to retire on the island because of it's temperate climate all year round.
