How to Achieve My "Stain-Glass" Art Style

in #originalworks6 years ago

Concerning My Paintings...

You might notice that my painting style differs a bit from my drawing style. Actually, it is the same style, it is just with the paintings I am enabled to do multiple layers easily. This is the primary foundation for my "twisted, psychedelic stained-glass art!"

Phase 1

I will show you the progression of a recent piece that is now in the possession of a good friend.

Phase 1.JPG

As you can see, the first layer is simply covering the canvas with some kind of off-white color acrylic paint that will be one of the contrast colors that make the final layer "pop-out" in places. Gee, it looks sort of like a Rothko at this point.... Should I paint over it? As much as I would love the money/crypto, I think I should let this layer dry.

Phase 2

Phase 2.JPG

Here I add the darker contrast layer that is going to make the final layer not "pop-out" so much where I want it to. These two layers form the "skeleton" layer to which the flesh (color) would be adhered. The final product is a papal motif, hence the reason you see an "inverted" cross here bearing the word, "love" among other things. This is how I hide messages. Wink Wink.

Phase 3

Considering this is a larger canvas and the brushes I use produce broad strokes, I was enabled to add more detail to this skeleton layer. It is just another dark contrast that will react differently with the final medium, giving the final image the illusion of impossible dimensions.

Phase 3.JPG

By now, 4 hours have usually passed due to waiting for acrylic paint to dry in addition to the time it took to paint. Can I add those hours to the overall production time based off of a $10 wage at this point? That is $40-$80 so far, which is the amount of money that I am typically offered for a piece such as this. This is in spite they have been appraised at a much higher value.

Phase 4

Ah, the final phase. I discovered doing this in 2014 when all I had to my possession was some acrylic paintings I had previously made and a box of unopened Crayola Portfolio Oil Pastels which I hadn't experimented with since "College". (It was a barn). This is the "flesh" layer that gives this lifeless skeleton the animus.

This motif is my "stab" at the Papacy as a whole. For now, just ignore the current Pope and focus on the position itself. What does it offer? It seems to be offering "enlightenment", but, at what cost? What is under the Holy Miter? An omnipresent mind? Some kind of mushroom cult? The Leviathan with its tentacles getting ready to spread out and take everything? All of the above? The flame in his hand is where the eye of the cross is located in previous images.

Now What?

It can mean whatever you want it to mean. I am sure many of you will have your own interpretations and feelings about it. If you do, feel free to tell me about it. I generally do upvote comments when my vote has value.

The final step is to spray it down with a sealant and coat it with glossy Mod Pog. This gives the final product a nice, "glassy" look. At this point I have probably invested about 12-20 hours into a piece and have listened to a lot of trance music.

That is how I create my paintings. The Universe is the Computer and I am just a Printer with a really colorful ink-cartridge.

Much Love!

Nice layering, you are good at this, thanks for sharing!

You are very welcome, @friendly-fenix! I find doing art this way is the most engaging, as I get to gaze in awe as my lines change depth as I draw them. Every inch is a surprise. Hope all is well in your neighborhood. Much love! <3

Thanks, for sharing @shaman-ra. It almost inspired me to try something similar, but Im too "blocked up" with other things to make any art right now.

How do you deal with that???

/FF

I get a block at least once a year. When this happens I do one of two things. One, I will go out onto the streets with my art supplies and find a comfy place to sit which makes it to where drawing/painting is my only option to occupy myself. When that idea isn't available, I move onto other creative things such as music composition, game hacking or humping Nature. If humping Nature doesn't inspire you, nothing will. :p Much love, mang!

Okay thanks for the advice @shaman-ra! I will see what I can do.

/FF

You're welcome. Lemme know if that "shit" works for ya. :D

I will! You are so right!
I need to get my ass out in to nature.
