Not content with the ยฃ25 version (bought on amazon) I saw how easily this could be done and quickly set about creating my own versions. As you can see, version 3 is about as cheap as it gets now. Affordable for anyone!

I've not done any work to V3 yet, but I will...

...because I really have gone sprouting mad!

V1 & V2

This is version 1 & 2 side by side, watching each other suspiciously.

The broccoli in the bottom layer of V2 came out so much better than I was expecting, despite not having a drainage level as you can see in V1.

Tell me that doesn't look amazing! Three days was all it took.

And guess what, it tasted superb.

Mixed up in a big salad with lots of other stuff.

I just need more more more....

The blue spray bottle visible in this shot has been essential for keeping each layer humid without disrupting things too much.

Why am I obsessed with eating this way?

Well, in a nutshell because there is a sustained period of extreme weather ahead of us (a natural cycle the Earth has been through many times) and it's going to affect mainstream agriculture first. This means food prices are going to rise quickly over the next few years. You may have noticed this already? The news that very few mid US farmers were able to plant this year is already having an effect on prices. Despite the USDA trying to cover this up as long as possible.

The wisdom of @iceagefarmer

So, food will soon be an expensive commodity and I am not planning on being one of those people who is not prepared. I am in the UK for the Summer with nothing but a windowsill, while Sabrina in France is learning the land as intended, the hard way.

Things are not growing as successfully as we had hoped but now is the time to make these mistakes and learn from them.

Sprouting rules!

Sprouting seeds is so simple, fast and effective, nutritionally speaking.

And you don't even need a home!

Just some plastic tubs.

Or glass jars.

Or whatever you can find which keeps in the humidity in, while permitting a little air flow.

They don't even really need the light. You could sprout them in total darkness, but I would imagine them to have better nutritional value if they have collected up a little bit of sun energy for you.

The key for me is this...

Make the mistakes now so that we won't be making them when it really matters ;)

I LOVE sprouting veggies! And the kids love it too, you can put it in and on anything. And you're right, you don't even need a home. When I first got the idea to travel with the kids with campervan or caravan, I was already thinking that sprouting would be the best way to keep growing (some of) our own food and getting as many nutrients as possible.
I also love pea shoots. Those combined with radish, broccoli, rocket, alfalfa and other sprouts are amazing in or even as a salad.

I used to look at those pricey grow thingies. Then I found these little plastic drawers. I bought them in the hardware store LOL. They're plastic with each 3 transparent drawers and they're stackable. I guess they are usually used for nails and screws, etc. but the sprouts grow just fine in it too.

Are you buying bulk seeds and storing them? I think I might start that, because like you said: you never know...

I've not tried this with the kids yet. Hope they love it like yours!

At the moment I'm buying small batches of lots of different kinds of seeds. Seeing what works best.

But yes, when BTC goes to the moon I will stock up with big bags of all my faves.

One point is that each year we can always let some of the seeds grow long enough to produce more seeds! We will however, need a garden to do this.

Yes, of course it's possible to let plants grow for the seeds and I've tried that too, but the downside is that you'd need quite a lot of plants to produce the seeds needed for sprouting if you sprout a lot... But yeah, buying in bulk is an option and it can be stored for a long time.

Sprouting is a great way to get fresh veggies during winter. You still have to grow vegables to get the seeds thou.

That is a good point. We must let some of these plants go to seed if we are to get through the winter without going to the seed shop.

Yes. Those seeds aren't cheap!

That looks and sounds easy to do. I might try this. Plants that used to grow well doesn't grow well anymore here in our yard. This would be a good alternative.

A tip: Not many know this, the nutrients/minerals most plants take out of the ground should not be replaced by any kind of fertilizer. What you need is to plant a good crop of beans (any kind, I think). When you have harvested your crop of beans, dig the plants back onto the soil.

While the beans are growing, they are returning into the soil what is missing, and by turning them into compost (in a way) you are adding even more goodness to your soil. Do this on a regular basis and you'll find your soil returning to better days again.

  • We used to plant a row of our cash crop, with rows of beans inbetween and then the next time, the rows moved, so that the beans are planted where the previous cash crop was. That way you have less of a cash or other kinds of food crop, but you do not have to sacrifice a season, while, beans are also a good food / cash crop. Beans also grow a marvellous sprout-food

As for the USA ( @samstonehill ) did you know that it is estimated that the land in the USA has, as an average, only about 2 inches of top soil? We spent thousands of years learning how to farm, feed ourselves, while looking after our soil. Then the corporations took over and they discarded all experience has taught us, because those are not what are considered (in the short-term) cost-effective systems.

Great tip! Makes total sense. Though I wonder why beans specifically?

I saw a guy on YouTube who just buries his organic waste directly back into the garden. No need to waste time making compost. Looked to be very effective.

So many things to say about US farming! Ultimately it ain't looking good for them.

Thanks for the tip @arthur.grafo. That makes total sense. We usually just burn it before but now we pile it up to where we compost things.

All year round, this is the simplest way to get nutrition.

Now get to it... looking forward to seeing your results ;)

LOVE that your inspiring me! hehe.... my "no plastic home made" sprouting system is COMPLETE and I shall (finally!) be posting about it in a few days - getting a batch started and photographing. :) Love & light to you.

@ecoTrain

It is great that we are inspiring each other...

Takes two to tango ;)

Looking forward to seeing your creations!

Wow, 25 Pound is really robbery! You should have send it back after seeing what it is.

I figured it would be bigger based on the pic. Probably should have checked dimensions ;)

We live and learn...

"Seeds not included".... that really a good one!! :)
Who knows what they would have asked for, if it came with seeds...

wow-thanks for scharing...nice......have a nice weekend

My pleasure. Thanks for appreciating ;)

you are reminding me to get sprouting again, especially now in the summer. Your body is really loving all these sprouts and it really is such a great way to get all your nutrients into you, my girls love sprouts. All of yours look great xxx

I just can't grow them fast enough. Gonna need a bigger windowsill!

Sprouting mad the lot of us :)

The way that is the cheapest here in the US - are these plastic lids that go on the end of a Mason jar (hopefully that sort of thing is easier to find in France than in the UK) - they work very well. My parents (raw vegans) use them all the time - and I really need to get a jar on the windowsill again. (Problem is, I don't have a windowsill where they won't get neglected... no windows in the kitchen.)

Interesting to use mason jar lids. There are so many creative ways to get this done. I love it ;)

The amount of light they need is actually minimal, so potentially you could look at other places around the home. Doesn't need to be a windowsill.

On top of the wardrobe?
