I signed up for MoviePass (One theatrical film a day for $10)
Three weeks ago I signed up for MoviePass. With the price of movie tickets going up I’m very excited about this.
If you are unfamiliar with MoviePass let me introduce you.
The GOOD:
For anyone living in The USA you can pay $9.99/month and go watch a movie at most any (91%) theater in the country once in 24 hours. They have partner theaters where you can use the mobile app to reserve a ticket. If it is not a direct partner you need to use a debit card they mail you. You choose which film to see and they credit the card with the exact amount you need. The theater gets paid the full amount for the price of a ticket.
MoviePass is not a new service. They used to charge up to $50 a month for the same perks. I believe at $10/month now this is a steal. Here in Austin you can’t watch a single film at night for under $11.
The BAD:
It’s been about three weeks and I still haven’t received my debit card. They got a huge amount of interest and are still backlogged. They tripled their card production facilities to try and catch up. At the very least they are communicating with their costumers.
No 3D or IMAX movies. I’m a bit bummed by this because this was one reason I enjoyed going to the theater. An experience you can’t get at home. Although it is understandable 3D and IMAX films cost more at the box office. Hopefully in the future they will have this as an add-on.
You have to be within 100 feet of the theater to check into the movie. You basically have to be at the theater to have your card charged with the money. I’m not sure how early you could purchase the ticket though.
It’s so cheap. What’s the catch? They are probably data mining you and selling your information. I’ve seen this claim made a few times but haven’t gone through the TOS line by line myself.
The END:
Is this business model sustainable? Probably not? They have to be hemorrhaging money right now. But hey after signing up for it I’m telling you about it, so something is working.
My goal is to pay for my MoviePass by writing reviews on steemit about the films I watch.
I hope in the future we could have an Austin Steemit movie night. I think MoviePass helps us get one step closer to that goal.
Sustainable or not, I’m going to take advantage of this deal while I can. And I hope you do too. I’ll be updating after my first experience.
My wife received hers last month. She has been using the heck out of it. Mine is caught in limbo like yours.
The CEO of moviepass says that he thinks they will become profitable as early interest wears off. I think that is a bit Pollyanna. I'm pretty sure there must be another revenue source like the data mining theory.
When did you order yours? I hope they come soon. Yeah they have to be data mining your info but hey for $10/ month they could have it.
