Spring To Life
Yesterday someone commented that there were no people in any of my photos.
That's actually something I strive to achieve, but it's particularly difficult in cities. If you look through my blog you'll indeed find few people. So today it was a glorious spring day here in Bavaria and I decided to share some live things for a change.
Look closely and you'll see a lone cow, King of the Hill.
He's lucky to be out and about enjoying the tasty fresh grass and flowers.
Maybe some of you remember my post about the Kindergarten in the woods from last autumn. We encountered them again today.
Not too far away we came upon some donkeys.
Of course the chicken were anxious to be fed.
Bavarians love horses
This is a farm work horse.
This beautiful horse was too hot to trot, so I didn't have a chance to ask about it.
Horses like this used to pull beer wagons. Often they are even larger than this. Because they were so big and muscular, they were bred to be gentle.
These storks are announcing that twin boys were delivered to this farm.
When you see cans hanging in front of a house, that signals a daughter was born.
Start saving for the dowry
Bixnmacher
Often one sees on the roadside a sign with the inscription "Zur Bixnmacherei" decorated with many empty tin cans. Then everyone in Bavaria knows that a newborn girl has arrived, which in Bavaria is called Bixn. In the past, girls were quite expensive for the parents, because they could only "help" in the household. The father of the bride's had to arrange the wedding. A bixmaker was a man who only fathered girls. Today, in the time of the nuclear families, even the father of only one girl is already a Bixnmacher. Many feminists dismiss the custom as a contempt for daughters, as the neighbors used to donate money to the father if the first-born child was a girl.

I do have to look closely for that King of the Hill :) We have horses here in our place but only for horseback riding for tourists around town. I like the custom of cans to announce a newborn baby girl. Do you think that will change though? Why not use stork as well?
There probably was a time when farmers really wanted sons to help them with the labor on the farm, but now it is just a custom without any negative connotations. I think it is a tradition that will be around for years to come in small towns here.
It's somehow sad in a way that some traditions and customs are forgotten. It's nice that this is still practiced and it's great that it has no negative bearing other than the history of it.
@roused You have received a random upvote from @botreporter because this post did not use any bidbots.
I don't have a lot of voting power, but I did want to thank you just the same. Please consider it a thumbs up and perhaps next time we meet, I'll have more SP to share with you.
Thanks that's a nice idea, wishing your success.
