Superfoods For SUPER Health

They are the reigning champions and the key to great health.  They are called "superfoods" because they contain great sources of nutrients such as healthy fats, antioxidants, B vitamins, and fiber.  These types of foods are great to keep cancer at bay and to promote a healthier lifestyle.  They are even an excellent way to lose weight because they help speed up the metabolism.  Most superfoods are plant-based but span every food group. 

When it comes to buying superfoods you should always go organic, it's a bit pricey but you can't put a price on your health!  Below is a list of superfoods that can help you lose weight, increase energy, live longer and help with skin and joint care. 

1. Quinoa  

This tiny grain is a powerhouse and is often referred to as a "super grain" it contains every essential amino acid and its high in protein and fiber.  It also contains a good amount of potassium, iron, vitamin E and magnesium.  The benefits of this "super grain" are increased energy because of the magnesium it contains, a healthier heart because you are getting all nine amino acids and lysine.  Therefore you are protecting your heart from disease and helping your cardio- vascular system.  It's also great to boost your immune system up and for constipation.  When I think of a  food that will give me everything I need in a short amount of time, quinoa is my number one!  

2. Tomatoes  

When I lived in NJ there was nothing better than a fresh Jersey tomato, It must be the soil because one bite from those vivid red organic tomatoes freshly picked made me never forget them.  My mouth is watering just writing about them now!  The benefits of organic tomatoes are greatly underestimated, they contain a high amount of antioxidants and contain all the major carotenoids such as alpha and beta carotene, which gives the tomatoes its nice color but most importantly converts into retinol or vitamin A in the body.  The rest of the benefits are endless better eyesight, a better immune system because of all the vitamins and minerals found in them, and they help prevent cancer specifically "prostate" because of a powerful antioxidant called lycopene which promotes overall good health. 


                                            


3. Cucumbers 

I bet some of you are surprised with this one! Cucumbers are a great superfood since most of the cucumber is water it's great for rehydrating. Believe it or not, cucumbers are a great superfood for losing weight because they fill you up and are low in calories.  Eating healthy and adding this superfood to your diet can also lower your risk of heart problems and cancer.  It's also great for cleansing your liver and kidneys, you can also use slices of cucumber for skin and eye care.  It is also a great energy booster because of all the B vitamins and carbs, so if you don't feel like drinking a red bull grab a few slices of cucumber!  Out of all the superfoods, I have listed this one may seem the simplest but is actually one of the most effective.  

4. Avocados 

Avocados contain about 20 vitamins and minerals and do not contain any cholesterol.  Which makes this another excellent superfood.  They are low in saturated fat, are sodium-free and contain an abundance of nutrients such as vitamin K, vitamin E and folate.  You can find more potassium in an avocado than a banana which helps with sore muscles and lowering blood pressure.  Avocados also have a use for beauty as they can be used as hair conditioner, moisturizers and face masks.  Most importantly avocados are rich in monounsaturated fatty acid which are beneficial for the heart. The amount of fiber an avocado contains is enough to speed up your metabolism which can lead to healthy weight loss.

5. Berries     

Berries are a great source of vitamin's and antioxidants, they help your body fight stress created by free radicals.  Free radicals cause illness to the DNA by a process called oxidation, this causes damage to the cell's membrane on a molecular level which leads to cells working poorly or dying off.  Eating berries such as strawberries and blueberries can help your body fight free radicals which can help with stiff or achy joints and also promote a healthy heart.  Some berries contain ellagic acid along with vitamins and minerals that can help fight cancer.  All berries are a great source of fiber, they even help improve memory.  So don't forget to pick up some organic blueberries next time you are at the market!

Heyyy, where are the leafy greens! Spinach, Sprouts, and Broccoli are super too, at least in my eyes :)

Yes, you are correct there are many superfoods like you mentioned, I just narrowed it down to my personal favorites in rotation at the moment! But in the future I will do a post on more leafy superfoods like Kale, broccoli, etc. :)

Good read. I didn't know that about cucumbers.

Some people, including myself, hold the belief that most of the claims about these foods are just hype. We don't need that many vitamins and most definitely no clinical studies show such grandiose claims.

@Kyriacos For me its about the quality of the food. You will always have people on both sides of the fence, some say it's hype while others swear they work. I like to think eating foods high in antioxidants, fiber, etc are great for the body. Thanks for your input.

The only antioxidant you need is your liver. Everything else is pretty much a hype to sell you over-priced food (and scare the shit out of you in the process).
