The Hong Kong from the 60'

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Hi, Dear Steemian friends. Here some other pictures to give you a feel of Hong Kong. As I say before Hong Kong have a feeling of "Blade Runner", no sorry this is "Blade Runner" that has a feel of Hong Kong as Ridley Scott says he was inspired by Hong Kong to design the set of the movie. When you look at the city from distance you see all the giant building with a very high tech look but when you go around the town you see the older Hong Kong mainly from the 60' when the construction laws were very blurry. It is not rare to see some 5 or 6 storey building with another building built on the top with a different architecture. It looks very anarchy even in the way the shops are setting their neons signs on the street. The dark holes in the center of the oldest building where the people use to throw everything in the past. Some of the little streets of one-meter width in between the buildings. Here are some pictures showing a little of this other side of Hong Kong.

I love Hong Kong! I wish there was more neon though, I saw a post the other day talking about the old style of Hong Kong from the movies and the streets were lined with neon signs of different shapes and colors that had a real cyberpunk, Blade Runner feel to it. Great shots!

I've been to Hong Kong first in 91 and it was really different than it is now. Today's government try to bring down the neons signs for safety reason they say. In 91 it was full of neons and paintings on the buildings and Aberdeen was full of junk and sampan. I remember also the walled city next to Kai Tak airport. I love Hong Kong but I prefer the old time.

That sounds amazing, I wish I could have had the chance to see it in those days. There is something about LEDs that just isnt as good as neon, I guess we always have the movies though

Yes, today they use a lot of LEDs to light up some shop, mainly pharmacy, but they keep the neons for the big street signs. Hong Kong without neons is not Hong Kong anymore. :(

Agreed, progress is a great and necessary thing but some things should remain the same. When they removed all the neon and bright signs in Las Vegas it just wasn't the same and I hope it never happens in HK

A lot of producers love Hong Kong for their scifi movie settings. It really makes a wonderful dystopian world background and I've recognised it frequently even though I've never been to Hong Kong!
Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger and The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis are a couple movies that I've watched reruns on TV recently. I don't think that movies are ever going to stop going to Hong Kong for inspiration. It's just too interesting!

Yes, Hong Kong is a place that really inspires movie directors the first "Blade Runner" from Ridley Scott is an homage to Hong Kong, even in the opening title he says "To Sir Run Run Shaw" who was the biggest producer of Hong Kong. The last movie where you can see only Hong Kong in a nice compositing way to change the town is "ghost in the shell" from Rupert Sanders it was all shot in HK as many of Sci-Fi movie lately. Hong Kong film industry is also one of the biggest in the world.
