The Goji Berry(Lyceum Barbarum) bushes are loaded with flowers and fruit today! ...

in #appics7 years ago

... We have grown many types of goji and they are not all equal! Most varieties are thinly loaded with berries. But not...THIS variety!! It is called “Phoenix Tears”....and it grows in a willowing manner and each branch is loaded with fruit and flowers. I shot this image so that you could see the flowering branches and some ripe berries from a nearby branch. We dry these berries and use them like raisens. mmmmmmm! Raw and full of juice, they taste like tiny sweet tomatoes. same family of plants. ;) for those interested, I’ll post a link below, where you can learn more and scoop your own genetics. Have fun growing your own #dfood ! Thanks for tuning in today appics community and steem blockchain! Have a beautiful day in your part of the world! -Jake and the Raw Utah family

This is a wonderful online nursery where you can scoop your own genetics and learn more about the Phoenix Tears variety of Goji: https://onegreenworld.com/product/phoenix-tears-goji-berry/

Goji is big in the health stores I’ve seen too. Cool info. I didn’t know they grew locally.

yah...that's why i started growing them about 11 years ago...cause of the price of them in stores lol. read this cool history on the phoenix tears variety bro.
Utah history within.....
"Phoenix Tears History
Plants identified as Phoenix Tears variety were discovered on a ranch near where the transcontinental railroad crossed the desert in western Utah. Read Phantom Voices for a complete account of their origin.

While deer hunting in the fall of 2004 Donald Daugs noticed some bright red berries on a friend’s ranch. He saw plants covered with what he recognized as wolfberries. The current ranchers did not recognize them and did not know where they came from. Just south of the ranch there is a place called Sinks of Dove Creek. This was one of the largest camps devoted to housing Chinese railroad workers when the transcontinental railroad was in its last stages
of construction some 160 years ago. With Wolfberries as one of their food choices, it is inferred that the West Desert plants were either planted by or dropped by the railroad workers. They have survived here for decades with no care and very little water.Rabbits, deer and cattle have dined on leaves and fruit.

Plants were moved to the site of the present Phoenix Tears Nursery in Cache Valley in 2004. Growth and production have been phenomenal. Much of the summer of 2009 was devoted to
experimenting with different modes of plant production. Plant growing techniques may be found in Growing Guide to Wolfberry Production.

Phoenix Tears Nursery, LLC was formed in October, 2009. Our goal is to provide affordable plants to both the backyard gardener and the nursery trade. All plants are Northern Utah grown at state inspected sites." http://www.phoenixtearsnursery.com/phoenix-tears-history.html

ps---there are also wild strains of goji growing in our deserts. they are much smaller berries and much more bitter. not the popularized chinese version. lyceum andersonii, pallidum and cooperi.

you are so cool. i love how you love plants and their stories/origins. we share it!! <3

:))) i'm still pondering the history of the rose you shared...and it's incredibly COOL history! i just love ya'll soooo much! we share so much indeed! thanks for poppin' by! i can see ya'll are incredibly busy...and I LOVE IT!

Mmmmm ...

A very beautiful and most nutrient-rich fruit, great!😋

Aloha, my Brother!

i think she's beautiful too ..sister seha. soooo red!!!!!! mmmmmm indeed! :) i appreciate you so much sister......ALOHA!

It's really nice to harvest goji fruit to make raisins or juice. This fruit certainly contains a lot of vitamins. Lots of results are obtained from your food forest, Jake. I hope that the food forest is maintained and balanced. Enjoy your day, my friend.

it sure does contain a lot of vitamins and other goodness!!! :) thanks my friend! i always appreciate you taking the time...to stop by and leave some kind words of encouragement. have a beautiful day too!

Man, look at all those flowers. This plant is gonna be loaded! Asian people like to eat their goji berries in savory soups, but I think your way of eating it preserves the nutrients much better. Can't believe I have never thought about eating it like raisins.

ohhhh yessss.....thanks for adding that! :) soups and teas!!!! they work wonderfully in them! i also use them with chaga mushroom in making a base tea....for making mead and kombucha. yah my little boy enjoys grape raisens and goji raisens a LOT! i hope ya'll got a TON of rain....soaking into your land today. your post on how the storm fertilize our land...is soooo good! please keep it coming sister!

Just out of my curiosity, have you shared the reason why you started on this journey of growing your own nutrient rich food? How long ago was it when you first started? If you have already done videos or posts in the past about this, do you mind sharing where I might find that info?

Thanks for your kind inquiry. :) I made a intro post for steemit....detailing a bit of my history. you can see it here: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@rawutah/10-years-of-the-food-forest-hello-steemit-vlog-1-2018

You can see a span of about 10 years worth of videos on our youtube channel. i was making wordpress blog posts....before youtube but then in 2008 just started making content for youtube...and then fb a few years later.

Back in 2001 I was working a face paced corporate job....and my body and spirit gave out...from that environment. I quit one day ...and walked away from that world. Went on "walkabout"...for quite a few years...until about 2008...when i started the food forest here in s. utah. bought the dome that year too. sold my car...and just went for it! :) hit me up anytime with questions. i feel you..and appreciate your journey you have shared so much! :)

the food forest and the earth...have healed my spirit. it's a daily process....as you know. ;) cheers my friend! YOU inspire me so much!

Wow, the post is truly inspiring! The comparison photos are like night and day. Love the drone shot. It makes me feel like I was at your place seeing the wonderful food forest. I can't believe you have done all this on just 1/4 of an acre. I am truly grateful that you have shared all your knowledge that you have gained for the last 10 years. I feel like I still have a long way to go to get to where you are today. You are awesome!

YOU are awesome my friend!!!!!!!!!! thanks for taking a look at the post! :) i can't believe what YOU are doing on that plot of land! i can't wait to see how all the development goes! inspired beyond measure over here! truly grateful you are here...and sharing what to me...is priceless information. CHEERS...and huge thanks again!!!! :)

We tried for our first time to grow these this year and were unsuccessful. Great information about the Phoenix Tears. We will look for those next year.

i hear ya. i tried growing many types...and even grew them from seed. these are special...these phoenix tears. read more about the history here: http://www.phoenixtearsnursery.com/phoenix-tears-history.html

better luck next year....they will work for you!!! cheers! :)

These are some resilient little plants! I had some kind of pest get to one of mine and completely strip it of all leaves. By the end of the week, all the leaves had completely grown back with more! Of course, that set that plant back a little, as it's nowhere near as big as the one that didn't get eaten, but still, it's alive!

totally happened to me too nate! first couple years...the leaves were ravaged. then...they just came back stronger...and bigger than ever...with so many leaves...there was enough for all the life to partake...and the plant to still survive! can't wait to see how your colonies evolve over time bro!!

I remember in our country there was a real rush, because of these berries. There was an advertisement that these berries contribute to weight loss, they were bought for a lot of money, even I could not resist and bought. Yes, they are delicious to eat them nice, but I have not lost weight :)

you made me smile here....thank you! :) hehe...yah that health rush for these berries happened here too. lots of companies came out with products selling goji in them. i decided about 11 years ago...to plant these goji plants...so i didn't have to keep spending money on buying them. :) i have not lost weight either lol! but...i do enjoy snacking on them. thanks for stopping by my friend.
