10 years of the food forest! Hello Steemit! Vlog 1. 2018

in #introduceyourself7 years ago

A little behind here.....but HELLO STEEMIT!!!!!!!! My name is Jake. My steemit handle is @rawutah. We are so excited to be on steemit and learning from ALL of YOU! Been lurking here for a few weeks getting our feet wet. We are a small family living in southern Utah....that has been learning to grow our own urban food forest for about 10 years now. We started by learning/being inspired.. from others sharing their own stories..in books, magazines, blogs....and the burgeoning YouTube at that time.

here's our first DTUBE video and tour of the forest(not sure how to embed it here)-------- https://d.tube/v/rawutah/0jkh5iu1

Here's our youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/rawutah. if you have any interest in seeing how this food forest evolved over the last 10 years, we documented quite a bit of video over time. Dtube and vlogging on this new steemit application now....has sparked our interest!

In the summer of 2008, after countless hours studying and learning from others..we just went for it...and started digging!!!

This picture was taken in the summer of 2008. Flags were staked to mark the underground utilities....and we BROKE GROUND!!!

image below: looking over the gate into zone two in 2008. freshly planted.

Here's looking over the same gate in 2017. almonds, peaches, nectarines, sea berry and countless herbs... bursting off the lot!

Here's a drone shot of the food forest ...as of last summer 2017. As you walk out our front door...you hit our zone 1. zone 1 is mainly cherries, pluots and plums. Then, as you walk across the driveway....you arrive at zone 2, the peaches and almonds. walking into the backyard you arrive at the cherries...asian pears and figs. zone four is the greenhouse. zone 5 stretches behind the house...growing mainly apples. zone 6 comes back up the other side of the house and is growing kiwi and pluerries. then back to zone 1. the FULL CIRCLE FOOD FOREST!

As our new trees started to root in the fall of 2008, we decided to buy a greenhouse to grow year round. this....is...looking down into zone 4, pre greenhouse build and forest build. this image was shot right as we purchased the home around 2003. i'm standing on the future site of the growing dome greenhouse. dead center!

November of 2008 we bought a greenhouse kit from "growing spaces greenhouses" and they helped us set it up over a few days. we ordered the 18ft diameter kit.

After the greenhouse was completed...we just kept planting!!!!! 10 years of adding fruit trees to this small 1/4 acre lot and we've grown to over a hundred fruit trees and countless perennial herbs. it's become a place of solace for all of us. a homeschooling/unschooling.....place for our son to dive into the nature and learn while growing some of his own food. a place refuge.....for the whole TRIBE!

our four year old son, river....loves exploring in the forest daily. living in wonder!

The following video is a brief interview done by a friend and fellow youtuber. shot in the summer of 2011.

Family... food forests, wildcrafting..raw Utah adventure......and blockchain technology!!

Good design is finding a solution to a problem. Great design is finding the simplest solution to the same problem.
Great Post!

thanks zabiangold!!!! good to be here!!!!!

Wow, thanks! UPVOTE AND RESTEEMED! I love the layout! I built huglecultrs this past fall and winter all my greens are now starting to pop. Check out my page @derekfreeman. Followed, cant wait to see more.

wow...thank YOU....derekfreeman!!!!! following you now also!!!! hugulkultur!!!!!! i bet.... they're starting to POP!!!!! cheers!!! can't wait to see more from you also. we have hugle mounds throughout the forest. the power of wood breaking down! one of the best methods for long term fertility!!!!!!!!!!! top coating the whole forest with woody chips also....sure adds to the whole system!

Yes it does, rich soil as long as you do you maintenance during the winter months. My soil is really terrible, so the huglekultrs give me the ability to not have to dig up rocks every spring :). I also plant by the moon, and my beds are usually ready to go first good warm spell we have. So now that the warm is more frequent my carrots, greens, beets, turnips, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and many herbs are already popped!

YEEEEHAWWWW!!! LEGEND!!! SO happy you're back!!! :)

yeeeeehawwwwww! the only thing missing from this post...is YOUR picture beloved co creator! thank YOU...for being here! about 7 years your hands and heart have created this forest. deepest aloha

Yay for urban food forests! We are less urban but I just recently posted a bit about our food forest in the making....we've been working on it since 2008, but not seriously until 2015.

We're on over an acre so there's a lot more space to fill! In some ways this is easier, in others, harder..

sweet....i'll check you guys out!!!!!! cheers to urban food forests...and food forestry!!!!!!!! following you now. so good to connect with others doing such work!!!!!
