Life is about moments

in #life6 years ago

We tend to live to fast to think about what living life is all about. Sometimes we are under pressure to finish stuff at work or stuck in traffic that we forget how little things can make a day better. Usually there is a common thinking that someday we will have the time to enjoy the little gifts we are given everyday but that is not true as it is also a habit to see life in a different perspective. I know there are always bills to be paid, loans to be paid and things to be bought but there is also a moment when we cross the line and stop actually enjoying the things and worrying more on how to get them. In my case I used to love to go camping and fishing and the truth is that I forgot when was the last time I went camping or fishing (usually both were performed on the same trip) but the problem is that I kept on buying camping and fishing gear like if I was going out every weekend. I finally made a stop like a year ago and I've been storing the fishing gear and camping gear for months just to gain dust and even start to age and get useless in some cases. I know this can be true for many others, the idea of having stuff or items that you will end up using some day is very common but I realized that is just the idea of missing the moment to use it what make us buy those items. Ideally you will just spend your money and time on those items and activities that you love doing and can actually do. Is for this reason and also to live simple that I've struggle the whole 2018 to pair down and reduce the clutter I've been accumulating for years. I will try to finish the year with less stuff that I started and that also includes clothing, gear and useless stuff.

Why I have struggle?

I tend to value the time and effort someone has put on at work or any activity to actually buy and give that thing to me, this pretty much acts like a blocker for me to get rid of old clothes or things that were given. I've been trying to reduce as much as possible to be able to just posses few things that I could carry with me or with a car to where ever I go. I've seen those youtube videos of nomads and minimalists but I've struggled to follow their path. Along the way I got lost and then I found myself and this is what I believe was the most valuable outcome of this experiment. I realized that I cannot be a nomad or minimalist like the youtube channels just because I will be my own version of minimalist and nomad.

What I learn from those ideas and videos?

It is really easy to amass things that you will not use and it is even harder to tell your family and friends why you don't like getting new stuff that you might not like. The art of giving becomes easier if you do not really want more stuff, instead I've been trying to make the wish list with stuff that you really want or need, in my case I just want few t-shirts single color and hopefully with v-neck, colors: black, gray, blue, white, green, or any other color that is not very bright.

Is it that easy?

No, it is not really easy to reduce and to avoid buying stuff, the buy one and get rid of another has worked like a charm for me. Most of the time it is harder to get rid of something than buying something else, so instead think on which item you will need to throw away, donate or give to someone else than the actual price of the item. I've been wearing just 2 pair of shoes and a pair of sandals the whole year, but 2 exceptions: wore my cowboy boots for Halloween as I was a cowboy and wore the black shoes that goes with the formal clothes. What I learn from this? I really need a new pair of shows to go to the office and hangout and a better running shoes, the ones I have are not really good running shoes.

Gift yourself what you really need.

This year I bought a XBOX One and sold it 3 months later, I realized that I was missing the afternoon walks with Bailey just because I tend to play. I got 3 books, gave 1 away and then next things I want are the bicycle and the UV and blue light blocking glasses both gifts will serve a purpose improve my health and lifestyle. I sold my old car and bought a small piece of land with it. The idea is to have few locations where in the future I could live or rent in an AirBnB or to someone.

Projects.

I decided to build up some gifts for my loved ones from reclaimed pallets that I know will be more useful than any other item, so it is not really just giving is being thoughtful on what you give to someone. I know my older brother will love a wine rack and I will be working to get him one. I will be working to create a bar table and wine/bottles rack for my backyard, create a new cage for my bunny and a roofed house for my dog Bailey, everything comes from my desired to learn new skills, worked on free/reclaimed stuff and eventually be able to build some furniture either for my future cabins or my future camper van, thing is that I will be enjoying the process of both ideas that I do not own yet.

Yes, easy to accumulate things and hard to get rid of things if there's an emotional attachment. I can't admit to being perfect at it, although I would rather pay for an experience than a thing.
