A while ago I had a pleasure of sharing some photos for a balconies photo challenge. While screening and digging my old archives, I came across a folder with old photos from 2007-2009 that I did not publish on the blockchain (because, you know, I gravitate to share my best stuff - and most recent stuff, actually, is always what I consider the best... now I photograph better, and also is capable of much better .raw files post-processing than it was in the year of 2009). So, enjoy a few photographs in the architectural genre: the balconies of the St. Petersburg. Part two.

Photos are clickable for high-res.

This was my entry to 'Architectural Photography' contest by @xaviduran.

And the last but not the least, this one is rather #streetphoto than architecture / design field, but I hope venerable curators will appreciate it as well.

New competition "Architectural Photography",
do you want to know more?

These are all beautiful, especially those with the faces.

Thank you! Those faces in architectural design are named 'mascarons' and I have photographed them in 2000-es a lot - enough to post every day for a couple of years, maybe ;)))

 last year

I am guessing the mascarons are done with a mold? Or some are hand sculptured?

not sure if I get the question correctly. (the mold?..)

as for hand-making... all may be different. in some cases, when building houses, typical samples were used (like fast food or a ready-made dress), and in some more expensive cases, piece work took place, and the mascarons decorating a particular house are the exclusive handiwork of an architect or studio, all different (within one house) and are not repeated on any other house. everything can vary.
well, in any case, one model of a mascaron, fashioned by the author for a specific project, could well be copied / replicated to decorate the whole house, and thus not be handmade.

Oh, from your reply you did understand my question, and your replied in a way I understand.
Mold is like a case, where you put the material, then you can make many models exactly the same.

 last year

ah! correct. they are produced this way indeed, one master copy and a lot of copies molded for decorating a certain building.

for me, mold = slime, I am most acquainted what this word means in terms of fungi, haha

Hello, my dear friend!
This is another excellent creative work. Just like the ones we are used to. Of all the images, the one that attracted my attention the most; besides the first one, was the penultimate one. That window light.... Beautiful!!!

 last year

thanks!!!!! I am happy to entertain you.
Agree with you about the penultimate one...
By the way, the last foto has a transparant at the balcony, that says in Russian 'We need justice and equal laws for all' -- this was my personal fave find too. Cheers! And join the fun.

That's one of the things it's not good for, not knowing the language. I was just looking at the buildings, without taking into account everything else, like the written thoughts for example! Thanks for highlighting its meaning! A big hug and much success!

thats exactly why I put a translation for you.
😘 Hugs back!

Hi @qwerrie!
Very nice facade photos. I loved the balcony in the first photograph, it's the one I like the most but I also liked the following monochrome ones. Are they related to architectural photography?
I'm not sure. I'm sorry if I'm wrong but your beautiful images do not tell me anything about an architectural context.
On the other hand, four (4) images are allowed... you posted eight (8).

Impressive architecture! I especially like the first one. Absolutely a beauty :)

 last year

thank you! I put it as a cover for a clear reason indeed. but that is traditional and simple, more or less easy to capture. my guess your pieces of architecture art were harder to catch, heh?

Your first photo is still amazing! Took my breath away :) Mine were taken in full daylight, walking all around the place, looking for good angels...

Hello @qwerrie

Thank you for your contribution to the contest.

You have chosen a very interesting topic, balconies. They are part of the structure of the buildings, but at the same time they are architectural details in their own right. I think you have chosen well the variety you present us, and the images are well composed, and with the right lighting. I really liked the entrance, although I miss a completely frontal shot, taken from a building in front without having to point the camera upwards, which would give the photo a more balanced feel.

Otherwise, very nice entry.
Best regards.

Hola @qwerrie

Saludos.

I miss a completely frontal shot, taken from a building in front without having to point the camera upwards, which would give the photo a more balanced feel.

Not necessarily, but I am not in a position to argue. I will only note that balconies are not always located on the first floor, but when the balcony is located, for example, on the 5th-6th floor (and the height of each apartment is not 2.5 meters according to the principles of Le Corbusier, but more, 3-4 meters), and a street of average width -> even the telephoto does not save from distortion. It is technically impossible to "look" at the balcony through the camera from the front. Sometimes this is prevented by some other reasons.

I have other photos of balconies, a small part can be considered as frontal, like this one:

2007_3289w-s.jpgCanon 350D + Canon 70-300mm | f 5.6 | t 1/100 | ISO 100 | ex-jpg

(had to erase it from the post due to '4 pictures' restriction).
Will definitely select strictly frontal captures next time.
