Van Conversion - A Quick Road Trip Test

in #travel6 years ago

The point had come when the Mobile Investigation Vehicle (MIV) / Bug Out Vehicle (BOV) was ready for a quick road test. So, out on the open road and a 3 night tester! First destination = North Yorkshire!

Flamborough Head LightHouse.JPG
The first two nights were at Flamborough Head, just next to the lighthouse. A great spot and famed for its bird population amongst the cliffs.
Van Bed Ready.jpg
The bed was adorned with 'Sea-Side' covers. The mattress arrived and was installed, so all looked comfy.

Pretty damn windy at the lighthouse and cold too. Temperatures dipping down to 4 Deg C (39.2F), colder if you encorporate the wind-chill. Inside, the insulation did it's job well. This time I bought along a rudimentary camping gas heater (£30). This was more than sufficient to raise the inside temperature to 20C (68F).
Fog Horn Station.JPG
A great view outside of the Fog Horn and Communications building.
Rough Seas and Wild Winds.JPG
Some really rough seas whipped up in the 40mph winds.
Bright and Clear At the LighHouse.JPG
Under glass, the outside appeared warm and quite pleasent.
A Warning From The Shore.JPG
Even at night the atmosphere remained cosy, but it was time to move on.
Watching the approaching Weather.jpg
My next location was the Western edge of the North Yorkshire Moors.
Beware The Moon Lads.JPG
Although pretty bleak looking and with snow on the ground, I was not concerned.
Cold Outside But Warm inside.jpg
Plenty of wide views were to be had, from the landscape to the rabbits, sheep and pheasants.
Home is where i park.JPG
A bit of a different setting, next to a small forest, but just as peaceful.
Changing Weather on the Moors.JPG
Moody scenes on the horizon.
A Great View.JPG
Overrall, things turned out pretty well. The insulation proved to work quite well. Just thoughts now about encorporating water and cooking facilites into the van.

Sort:

Glad your initial test went well and I hope you didn't get too cold, would it be wise to camouflage the van?

A bold approach and hiding in plain sight is the name of the game.
I would also never park up in a place that would be too dodgy either....

howdy sir preppervetuk! so you are going to be traveling from now on? You vent that gas heater up to the roof somehow?
Your traveling looks wonderful, the photos are perfect!

Yeah, I am very concious about Carbonmonoxide poisioning.
It is only a temporary measure until I get some blown air heating installed. Until then I intend to use this little heater with a carbonmonoxide detector and the roof vents open..
That was just a test trip, hopefully doing a few more pretty soon with some accompanying photos...
Thanks man.

howdy sir preppervetuk! well it's so interesting and many of us are going to be wishing we could just travel around like that!

I always like to grasp the opportunity. Later on in life i may not have the opportunity to do it again.

howdy sir preppervetuk.. I like your philosophy!

Nice pictures!! I'm glad the insulation did it's job. You spent a lot of time and tended to a lot of details on that so I'm thrilled it all paid off. Now, I can travel through you! Ha ha. Awesome Awesome. I am so happy for you! 😎❤️

I have quite a few options now... Including being able to use the van as a temporary bug out vehicle and sleep anywhere. Its a great addition to any preppers arsenal.... Pitty it isn't a tank lol.
So yeah... I'll be posting some travel pictures of England and the UK, including all the little villages on the way...
Thanks for stopping by.

I Look forward to seeing the pictures! I love adventure. You will come up with an interior design for the van that works for you over time. You need a way to "do number 2 business" in the van. Portable composting toilet? You know those washing bowls from like the victorian era? With the pitcher? You could do something like that instead of installing a sink. Are you planning on putting in some cabinets?

I'd like to keep it simple, so initially i'll use a 'pull out Portalloo' and pump shower in the shower cubicle. There will be a 6ft bathroom with sink and a fully installed kitchen.
Overhead lockers too, but, lol one step at a time.

Oh Wow. Doesn't sound simple to me! Fully installed kitchen. Cool. Overhead lockers are a must, yeah.
